Morag (Class of 1962) is an accomplished Australian journalist, writer, newspaper columnist, a leading Australian literary commentator, a judge of many literary awards as well as a contributor to broadcasting programs. Morag holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from The University of Melbourne, and a Master of Arts and Diploma of Education from La Trobe University.
From 1991 to 2003 Morag was the Editor of Eureka Street magazine and it was during this time that the magazine received a prestigious Walkley Award. She has held the position of Adjunct Professor in Humanities and Social Sciences at LaTrobe University and spent some time in Education. In 2004, Morag was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her services to journalism.
Morag has been a member of many boards and groups including the Brigidine Sponsorship Group, Kilbreda College Stewardship Council, the Victoria Law Foundation Board, the Australian Book Review Board, MacKillop Family Services Board and the Melbourne Autumn Music Festival Board among others.
In Morag’s own words, “Working with the Brigidines, and latterly with Kildare Ministries, has been one of the formative experiences of my life. I have been privileged to take with me into other parts of my professional life stellar examples of independent thought and decision making, integrity in leadership and governance, strength, bravery, honesty and kindness”.
Commissioned by Pan McMillan, Morag has been engaged in researching and writing a biography of Australian poet, Peter Porter. Research is now complete, having been delayed by restrictions encountered during Covid-19. She is hopeful of completion this year.
Morag is currently contracted by the National Library of Australia to conduct ‘Whole of Life’ long interviews for their Oral History program interviewing writers, artists, activists and statesmen (including Past Pupil of Distinction Inductee, Jennifer Isaacs).
Morag continues to write, review books (and the occasional choral concerts) for The Age and Australian Book Review. She has maintained her association with Montsalvat by serving on their Foundation Board and is actively involved in the music ministry and life of her parish.
