Year 8 DTE

Congratulations to our 2023 winner of the Year 8 Photoshop Competition, Ava Whyte from Room 52. She had to create a work of art, using Photoshop and combining the theme of Art and STEM. Ava drew on her interest in marine biology to create her work of art. Well done, Ava!

Year 8 Photoshop Competition, Ava Whyte

Recently, Year 8 students have been learning all about 3D printing. They have learnt things such as how 3D printers work, what kinds of things can be printed with a 3D printer and how to best use 3D CAD software to create their own original pieces in a 3D space. They are currently working on creating an original solution that solves a problem they can see around them. As you can see from the photos below, some are coming along very nicely!

Year 9 ETE

The Year 9 Emerging Technologies class have really dazzled with their data analytics skills. They’ve explored real data sets, manipulated the data and discovered interesting facts about Pokémon! After this, they were able to create eye-catching infographics. It’s amazing to see all the different interpretations of data presented.

Women in STEM Morning Tea

On 6 September, Kilbreda hosted a very special event, the annual STEM Morning Tea. Six past pupils, all of whom now study or work in STEM related areas, came back to give some tips about studying and working in STEM. We had three keynote speakers: Tamara Ballerini, Yasna Naicker and Enrica Lepatan and three panel speakers from Year 12, 2022: Phoenix Hoppe, Lakmi Dabare and Georgina Heath. With experience ranging from forensic science, cybersecurity, engineering, radiography, computer science and even aeronautical engineering, there was something for everyone at this event!

The morning tea was a wonderful celebration of Kilbreda’s young people in STEM, both past and present. I’d like to acknowledge the hard work of our five STEM leaders in helping to organise and facilitate this event: Hayley Meure, Angelique Vargheese, Emily Cox, Georgia Kelly and Jade Hobkirk, who made this day such a great success.

Here are just some of the favourite moments from the morning from our students:

What was your favourite moment/memory from the STEM Morning Tea?

My favourite part of the Women in STEM Morning Tea was learning more about the possibilities of where STEM could take me into the future. It was interesting to see how much of a variety there is in all the different STEM career opportunities.
Lola Martin
Year 11

My favourite moment of the STEM Morning Tea was hearing about all the different pathways our speakers went through in order to end up where they are today. It was definitely a highlight to hear and know that there is always a way to get into your dream job and what you want to do!!
Kiara Reddy
Year 11

It was so nice to see people get reunited again and see people we hadn’t seen since graduation. Even the alumni I’d never met were bubbly and kind and exciting to chat with.
Hayley Meure
Year 12

It was such a great atmosphere as everyone was so lovely and we all shared the same interests and had such great conversations about STEM. I loved hearing about some of the Alumni’s pathways into university and how some were not as conventional as others and it was great to see how normal that actually is.
Bridget Dix
Year 12

It was such a fun experience for people with similar skills and interests. I was so excited to get to help out and be a part of the experience and hope that I will be able to come back and present in the future.
