Planting the Seed Project

The ‘Planting the Seed Project’ is a collaboration between Eco Warriors Australia, Ecology and Restoration Australia, Kingston Council and Kilbreda College. A grant was awarded to the project from the Port Phillip Bay Fund and supplies were donated from Mitre 10, Cheltenham. This project gives students the opportunity to restore an area of degraded native vegetation along the Mentone Foreshore, improve their understanding of the activities needed to enhance local biodiversity and give them a direct understanding of the actions needed to protect our environment. Recently the group went on their first visit to the Foreshore. The degraded area they are caring for was full of weeds with very few local native species. They received insights from ecologists from Ecology and Restoration Australia, identified plants to restore at the site and took plant cuttings to propagate at the College. They collected 140 cuttings from seven different species, which are now safely housed in our greenhouse to establish over summer and will be planted in April next year. We congratulate the team of dedicated students working on this vital project.
