A Snapshot of Year 9

Pastoral

On Tuesday, the Year 9 Class Captains led a discussion on friendships, focusing mainly on the characteristics of friendships in our year level. We prepared a variety of scenarios, which we asked students to discuss in their groups so that everyone could participate in the conversations. We discussed ways to embrace the wonderful features of friendships and gain a deeper understanding of one another, as well as what a ‘healthy’ friendship looks like.

It was amazing to see and hear the effects each aspect of the conversation had on us. The presentation of an ‘open friendship group’ as opposed to a ‘closed friendship group’ was a significant highlight from Tuesday’s session, which showed how friendships are easily broken, like a ‘domino effect’.

I really enjoyed the session and I thought it made a positive difference to the whole year level.

Year 9 Elective – Duke of Edinburgh International Award

Collage by Ella Wall
Crochet by Lily Mealor

This year. we have both chosen to undertake the Duke of Edinburgh International Award elective, which has been a great experience and highlight of our year so far. We had the opportunity to go on a hike at Cape Woolamai, Phillip Island earlier this year. We got to enjoy the amazing views and learn life skills such as putting up a tent, cooking with a trangia, lighting a fire and striving through the long, challenging walks.

Another aspect of this elective is undertaking volunteer work, skill and physical recreation activities for one hour every week. We both chose to volunteer at the Chelsea Netball Club and help train a netball team each week. It is a great opportunity, which has allowed us to help younger kids and teach them to expand their skills with the new drills we demonstrate. We both really enjoy coaching and watching the children improve.

Another aspect of the Duke of Edinburgh International Award is choosing a skill that we get one class every week to improve. We are very privileged to be able to choose from a very wide variety of skills, anything we’d like really! Here are the goals we made at the beginning of the year.

Lily: My goal was to improve my crocheting skills and make tops from scratch. I found inspirational pictures on Pinterest and use them to create many different tops. I have now completed three tops, one skirt and one bikini top, all in the span of eight weeks!

Ella: I aim to be prepared when I go away by journaling plans, itineraries and collages. Before I went away, during class I would plan ahead for my trip by making plans and now that I am back, I am making photo collages of each day.

Kilbreda Festival

Kilbreda Festival was an amazing experience, from getting to perform in front of large audiences to seeing different talents from across all of the different year levels. We enjoyed cheering on the other performers and seeing how talented Kilbreda College really is. I am very thankful that I got to participate in K-Fest, and I am looking forward to continuing it in the years to come.
