Collective Shout Presentation

Last week Melinda Tankard-Reist, a writer, speaker and blogger, as well as a passionate advocate for women and girls, came to talk to us alongside Daniel Principe. They spoke to us about many issues girls face and delivered a wonderful presentation to help break down the stereotypes placed on women in this age. We explored many different issues such as the sexualistaion of young women and shared some experiences that students in our year level have gone through. This helped us as a year level to grow and work together to make our community a safer place for everyone, no matter their sexuality, gender or identity.

At the end of the presentation we shared insightful reflections on what we had learnt and we are confident in saying that everyone took something from this powerful message. The inspiring presentation was such an amazing experience for everyone and as a year level, was a very valuable activity.

Imagine a world where women and girls are valued for their personalities, gifts, talents, dreams and aspirations, and treated with respect in all areas of the community, in particular the media and online.

On Tuesday 4 October, following a presentation by Melinda Tankard Reist and Daniel Principe, that’s exactly what the Year 9 cohort are starting to dream about, as we analysed the influences we may have been exposed to from childhood into adulthood that affect body image, self-esteem and self-worth, how we let others treat us and what we expect from relationships.

The students enjoyed the opportunity to find their voice, share with each other, and learn the following:

At the presentation, I became further aware of how women are portrayed and sexualised in the media and advertising.’
Scarlett Leeds
Year 9

It really opened my eyes to the exploitation of women and the misogyny that this world is riddled with. It opened my eyes to many things I thought was normal.’
Zoe Fitzgerald
Year 9

When Melinda made us guess what the ads were for, it helped me learn just how much girls are sexualized. Women have been sexualized all around us since we were young, but we need to change that and realize we are more than our bodies.’
Heidi Sinclair
Year 9

The best part about the presentation was being able to listen to other students’ thoughts. From this we were able to learn about the perspectives of people with different experiences.’
Annabelle McHugh
Year 9

‘The best part was when we were able to all share our experiences, as well as our thoughts about how women are important and have feelings.’
Taylah Bell
Year 9

‘I learnt how to stand up for my rights and how to deal with disrespect towards women in the media.’
Ella Kelly
Year 9

Congratulations to the students involved for their willingness to address these stereotypes, and to work towards making the world a safer and more nurturing place for all young people.
