The Big Sister Little Sister Mentoring Program: Empowering Year 7 Students in Their High School Journey

Starting high school is an exciting milestone, but it can also be a daunting experience for many Year 7 students. To ease this transition, the Big Sister Little Sister Mentoring Program has emerged as a beacon of support, fostering a sense of belonging, confidence, and community among our newest high schoolers.

Building Connections and Confidence

The Big Sister Little Sister Mentoring Program pairs Year 7 students (Little Sisters) with older students from Years 10 and 11 (Big Sisters). These pairings create meaningful relationships that provide Year 7 students with mentorship, friendship, and reassurance as they navigate the challenges of their first year in high school. Whether it’s finding their way around the school, managing homework, or making new friends, the support of a Big Sister helps Little Sisters feel more secure and confident.

Creating Lasting Impact

The Program’s success is evident in the feedback from both Big and Little Sisters. Shania, a Big Sister, shared her experience: “I had so much fun getting to know my Little Sister. It felt so rewarding to see her grow in confidence. Watching 7.70 adapt and form connections has been such a highlight for me.”

The impact goes beyond the Year 7 students – Big Sisters also develop crucial leadership, empathy, and communication skills, fostering a strong sense of community within our school.

Looking to the Future

As we move through the school year, we look forward to watching these mentorship bonds strengthen with the Peer Support Program commencing in Term 2.

The Big Sister Little Sister Mentoring Program has proven to be an invaluable part of the Year 7 transition process, ensuring students feel supported and connected from the very beginning.
