Emotional Regulation

This week, during pastoral class, Rooms 70, 72 and 74 were fortunate to have ‘Toolbox Education’ facilitate a workshop on ‘Emotional Regulation’. The key points were:

  • to recognise the signs of emotional distress
  • to accept emotions as they are
  • to be able to express emotions in healthy ways.

During that time, the remainder of the year level were addressed regarding their passion and purpose. They explored a range of values and ethics with reference to contemporary issues and reflected on how they have lived out the College values throughout Semester 1. They were challenged to recognise that they have values-based reactions to certain situations and to consider their passions and purpose.

During the next pastoral period, Rooms 71, 72, 73 and 75 will participate in the ‘Toolbox Education’ workshop.

Positive Learning Behaviours

We are very conscious that at this time of the year students are busy with assessments in most subjects.  The College is always willing to work with the students to help organise their work and reduce their stress.

Something each student could do at home is to make sure their homework space is designed to help them be as efficient as possible, free from distraction, comfortable and well lit. Make sure there is a comfortable chair for them to sit on and that have all the stationery and equipment that is needed.

If you child is feeling overwhelmed about schoolwork, please encourage them to use the Library, teachers, Year 7 Homework Help and Maths Help in the Library to get some of the schoolwork done. They can get together with their friends and make the work fun.

If you child is struggling to meet due dates, please encourage them to ask for an extension request from their subject teacher. This is a formal process. The subject teacher will consider the request, the student will be asked to complete an extension form which will be signed by the teacher, parent and myself. Extension request forms are available from my office.

Ready, Read, Revise and Reset

Reward charts are back with a difference! READY, READ, REVISE and RESET was launched last week. This reward system focuses on Year 7 students using the time between classes to focus on the following:

READY: Organising themselves and their classroom (books for lessons need to be organised at the end of period 2 and period 4)

READ: Quietly, particularly if they have just had a practical class

REVISE: Revising the work they have completed in the lesson prior

RESET:  Having a quick brain-break with a little movement, perhaps stretching

Note: Movement to lockers should be kept to a minimal and toilet breaks taken during recess and lunch.

When a teacher has consistently (at least 3 times) observed the ‘four Rs’ throughout the week they are encouraged to award that class with one star on Fridays. The ‘four Rs’ reward chart will be up in the Year 7 corridor. Canteen vouchers will be awarded to the class that receives the most weekly stars!

Thanks for your continued support.
