Year 12

It seems that time is flying by this year for the Year 12 students. They have begun the term with their ‘Inspire Day’ where they heard from past students and staff members who all shared tips and strategies for learning, as well as a wonderful and engaging talk by Tammy van Wisse, which was certainly inspiring. They have been engaged in sessions about planning for life beyond Kilbreda College, including how to apply for courses and what life is like beyond the walls of Kilbreda.

Last term, at last they were able to celebrate as a year level at their Year 12 Formal, and what an occasion it was! It was wonderful to see the whole group laugh, dance and converse with each other. I am sure treasured memories were made.

Incursion with Sonya Karras

On 7 June, we were lucky enough to have Sonya Karras come and present to the Year 12 students. Her presentation focused on issues many young people will experience such as peer pressure, the influence of alcohol and ways to stay safe. Her engaging presentation was real and honest. Sonya herself shared with us that she had worked in the event industry most of her life, and as a result knew the ins and outs of staying safe while still having a good time.

Sonya was a relatable person to listen to, sharing with us some personal anecdotes about her friends and their own sobering experiences with drinking and partying. She even (with the help of the lovely Ms Delahunty) gave us a live example of a recovery position.

All up, Sonya was an incredible guest speaker. As most of our year is already or is turning 18, her wisdom was very relevant to our current lives, and she delivered it in a way that caught our attention as young people. We learnt many lifelong important lessons and had a few laughs along the way!

Year 12 Formal

The arrival of the formal could not have come soon enough. With months and months of planning, Friday 10 June was the Year 12 formal. The list was endless, driving from appointment to appointment, just to tick off the glow up list. First tan, then nails, hair and makeup, it was a never ending to do list.

Once finally arriving at ‘The Ivory’, we were welcomed by our wonderful teachers, who too had glammed up and were looking amazing. Excitement flowing through the air it was clear we were in for a fun night. After many photos and compliments of “wow look at your dress”, “omg you look stunning”, we were finally seated at our tables ready for the night to begin.

The Welcome was a perfect way to start the night and was spoken so beautifully by Ella and Mietta. It was topped off by the wonderful speeches presented by our College Co-Captains and our groovy coordinator, Ms Dempster. Entrees were now served and we were ready to dig in.  After scoffing down our entrees, next up was the long awaited awards, which were decided by our whole year level and presented by Erin and me. The awards were time for a laugh and gave us the ability to reflect on many hilarious moments that we have shared together as a year level. Erin and I hope that everyone enjoyed the awards and in years to come can look back on them and smile.

Erin and I had kept the year level in their seats for long enough; it was clear that the dance floor was well overdue. The best part of the night was breaking it down on the dancefloor, to absolutely any song which came on, even if we just pretended that we knew the words. Special mention to Mr Moore who took us all by surprise with his immaculate dance moves and his eagerness to be a part of the ‘Mosh Pit”. Another mention goes out to the one and only Ms Dempster who did not disappoint with her rocking moves to her favourite song “Feel the Love” (by Rudimental).

It is safe to say that we all feel the love after the formal. It was just another great destination in our Year 12 journey which undoubtedly brought us closer together. Very, very big thank yous go out to our amazing teaching staff, all other staff who took part in the night, the staff at the Ivory and most of all our wonderful cohort for embracing the night and making it truly memorable.
