Year 10

The Year 10 students have been busy undertaking their Subject Selection choices for their upcoming transition into either the VCE or VCE/VM pathway stream in 2024.

Part of the Year 10 program for this year has been the implementation of the Futures Program where once a cycle, students are given the opportunity to investigate future career opportunities and pathways to further study or employment. Along with the Pathways Evening which was held a couple of weeks ago and conversations with teachers, students have submitted their preferences.

Each student was then afforded an interview with a staff member to discuss their subjects and future pathway choices. While it has been a lengthy process, this has given the students the greatest opportunity to discuss their subject choices, preferences, consider their study habits and think about where they might like to be in the future.

An upcoming Careers Expo evening will also be another opportunity to consolidate these choices. More information on the Careers Expo can be found on the Career’s page in this issue.

Duke of Edinburgh International Silver Award

This year we’ve have had 12 students from Year 10 accept the challenge of completing their Duke of Edinburgh International Silver Award . Over the last holidays, a group of them participated in their practice journey. This was all student organised and led. The students have commenced their skill, physical recreation and volunteer components and will complete the Qualifying Journey at Wilsons Promontory in Term 4.  A student reflection is below,

Student Reflection

On 26 June, seven girls including myself went down to the Cumberland River Holiday Park. We started off by asking the local information centre for maps of our walks. The workers suggested different walks for us as our preplanned walks were too dangerous due to the recent rainfall they had had.

Our first walk was from the Sheoak picnic area to Lower Kalimna Falls and back to Sheoak. This walk took three and a half hours. At the halfway point we got to the waterfall, and it was gorgeous! When we got back to the carpark, we cooked sausages on the barbeque for lunch and they were delicious. We then went to our campsite and all worked together to set up our tent and sleeping arrangement. After that we decided to go for a walk along the beach to watch the sunset. We walked 5km and it took us 45 minutes. When we got back to our campsite, we decided to cook dinner. On our trangias we cooked mince and we had nachos.

On Day 2, we started with a sunrise walk on the beach for an hour. After breakfast, we then went on our second walk. We walked from Allenvale carpark to Phantom Falls, then to the Canyon, after that was Henderson Falls and then to Won Wondah Falls for lunch before returning to Allendale. A total of 12km, which took four hours and 45 minutes. All three waterfalls were beautiful and we also walked through a stunning canyon. After our walks, we went back to our camp and packed all our sleeping bags away and packed up the tent.

Overall, it was an awesome experience with stunning views and amazing walks! We all loved it and would do it again!
