Year 10

Year 10 students were super busy leading into the last weeks of Term 2. The students enthusiastically participated in all facets of the Futures Week program, which was designed to assist them in their upcoming VCE and VCE VM subject selections.

Another highlight was the Year 10 Formal, which was warmly embraced by all the students as they got the opportunity to glam up and hit the dance floor for some fun with their friends.

Futures Week

During the last week of Term 2, all Year 10 students were so fortunate to have the opportunity to take part in Futures Week. This week of fun and learning was to encourage us to branch out and consider different career paths and the subjects required.

At the beginning of the week we were able to get a taste of each VCE subject that the College has on offer. Of course, it was quite hectic as there were so many subjects in so little time. However, many of my peers and I found that it was very beneficial and I am now considering a range of different subject choices that I would never have thought I would enjoy. Throughout this stressful process we were filled with lots of encouragement and support from our teachers letting us know that we should pick subjects we love and enjoy! The two days were buzzing with nervous and excited energy as reality kicked in that in just under three years we will be going off into the real world!

On the Wednesday, we were fortunate enough to be able to select tertiary institutions to tour and get a feel for what life post our College will be like. I was lucky to be able to go to The University of Melbourne first. With everyone making their own way there the independence began to kick in! The University of Melbourne was amazing and we were all so fascinated by the different buildings and courses they had on offer. I then went to Deakin University and I was so inspired and excited. Our tour guides took us into their incredible facilities and after we told them what we wanted to do and they took us to the relevant learning spaces. Deakin was such a welcoming and fun environment!

At the end of the week we all chose four fun activities to participate in which were spread across the two days. These were designed for us to have fun and to also explore a wide range of careers that are out there that so many of us were unaware of. With many different options it was hard to narrow down our choices. On Thursday, I chose a tour of the MCG and the Melbourne Museum. I thoroughly enjoyed both tours and my eyes were opened to the many career paths that both places can offer. It was so cool to see beyond my seat at the MCG and to look around at the historical pieces at the Melbourne Museum!

On the final day of Futures Week, I chose to go to Parliament House where I had so much fun. We were even offered an exclusive tour by Anne Marie Hermans! By going to Parliament House, I confirmed my longtime dream of pursuing politics and so many of my peers were just as excited as I was. After Parliament House, I had the pleasure of going to the Melbourne Aquarium. Everything there was stunningly beautiful and we learnt about the many positions in Marine Biology. From the subject taster days, I was already keen on electing Biology and going to the Melbourne Aquarium further increased my interest.

At the start of the week, we were told that this could be the week in which we decide on what our futures may contain and I (and many more) can confirm that this week enabled us to make final decisions about the direction of our futures and the subjects we need to take in order to get there!

Year 10 Formal

On 20 June, our Year 10 cohort got to enjoy their Year 10 formal, which had a ‘Black and White’ theme. Organised by the Level Leader: Year 10, Ms Baddeley and the Year 10 Class Captains, our students enjoyed a night of monochrome magic in our very own Mary Dalton Hall.

Upon arrival at 7.00pm, students were greeted with fun, theme-appropriate decorations, a sparkly photo booth, delicious food supplied by our catering staff and a fabulous DJ to kick off the night right! The food included spring rolls, cupcakes, sliders, refreshing drinks including a colourful punch and loads of soft drinks to fuel our best dance moves.

On the dance floor, students gathered in crowds and danced the night away with special appearances from teachers and staff including Mr Kelly and Ms Baddeley giving their best performances. With some light shows (or you could say, technical difficulties) the best playlist and amazing company, our students had a great night!

And what kind of night would it be without captured memories? Around the dance floor, you could see memories being caught on camera and smiles all around. Our photo booth proved to be super popular and we all took home handfuls of photo strips, highlighting a great night with their friends.

On the runway, our students strutted in their best clothes, knowing how to dress for the theme. Long silky black dresses, white flowy skirts and sharp jackets emphasised our students’ love of getting dressed up! We danced to the very last minute at 9.00pm begging for “one more song!” There was no shortage of laughter, singing and dancing, and it can be said that we all went home with tired feet and tired voices from yelling out lyrics all night long and jumping beside our best mates.

Thank you to Ms Baddeley, Mr Binion and catering staff and all other staff who contributed for the hard work that was put into creating an incredible night that we will all remember. What a great way to end Semester 1!
