Empowering Girls:  A Global Movement and Local Commitment

As the world commemorates International Women’s Day, the global landscape of women’s empowerment unfolds with a compelling blend of progress and persistent challenges. Across continents, women are harnessing their strength, bravely challenging societal norms and fervently advocating for gender equality. From the exhilarating journey of the Matildas to the vibrant celebration of sisterhood showcased in the electrifying atmosphere of Taylor Swift’s ERAs tour, the prevailing theme of women as an unstoppable force resonates profoundly.

Since its establishment in 1904, Kilbreda College has remained steadfast in its commitment to inclusivity and empowerment, counting women in and embracing a culture of growth. Each day, I am privileged to witness firsthand that young women are an unstoppable force when provided with the space and opportunities to discover and define themselves. This week, our community has been reminded of the creativity and power of girls, as evidenced by the remarkable achievements of our students.

At the Melbourne Archdiocese of Catholic Schools annual Creative Arts Exhibition, the exceptional artwork of Charlotte S (Year 12), Indie Marshall and Catalina Leitch (Class of 2023) garnered well-deserved recognition, showcasing the depth of talent within our community. Their fearless approach mirrors the spirit of individuals like Alex S, Vanessa C and Kiara M (Year 7), who were appointed as Junior Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Junior Councilor of Kingston, embodying leadership and civic engagement at a young age.

Moreover, the dedication displayed by our CGSAV swimmers and divers, passionate debaters and courageous student leaders reflects the unwavering commitment and drive that permeates our College community. This commitment is evident in the multitude of students who eagerly applied for student leadership positions, demonstrating their bold ideas, hopes, ambitions and plans for the future.

Indeed, Kilbreda College nurtures a culture where girls are encouraged to embrace curiosity, pursue their passions and fearlessly chart their own paths. From the debate podium to the diving board, from the art studio to the corridors of leadership, our students continue to inspire us with their resilience, determination and unwavering spirit. They embody the essence of what it means to be an unstoppable force, propelling themselves and our community toward a future filled with promise and possibility.

Our alumnae, such as Onella Muralitheran (2016), epitomise the spirit of empowerment as they challenge stereotypes and pave the way for others. Their stories inspire us to recognise every girl’s inherent worth and potential, encouraging them to embrace their aspirations with confidence and determination.

Central to our approach is the dedication of our staff, who serve as mentors and role models for our students. Through their guidance and support, they instil in our girls the importance of aiming high and making meaningful contributions to society. We believe that education is the cornerstone of societal change, empowering students to challenge inequities and shape a more inclusive future.

As we commemorate International Women’s Day, we celebrate the achievements of women worldwide while reaffirming our commitment to empowering girls at Kilbreda College. Together, we can accelerate progress and build a future where every girl has the opportunity to thrive and succeed, unimpeded by barriers or biases.
