Embracing Belonging:
A Vibrant Start to Kilbreda College’s 120th Year

The commencement of the 2024 school year at Kilbreda College has been nothing short of exhilarating as students joyously reconnect, filling our hallways, classrooms, sporting fields and campus with the vibrant energy that defines our College community. Observing the lively chatter and witnessing the enthusiasm with which our girls have embraced the new academic year has been a privilege.

A pivotal moment in these early weeks was the celebration of our Opening School Mass on Thursday 15 February, a significant occasion marking the 120th year of education in the Brigidine Tradition. Co-celebrated by Bishop Tony Ireland and College Chaplain, Father Peter Matheson, the Mass held a profound message that echoed through our corridors.

Bishop Ireland, in his insightful homily, delved into the core of our 2024 College value, “Hope – Bringing a Sense of Purpose.” He emphasised a timeless truth: one cannot attain a deep sense of purpose without first cultivating a sense of belonging. This sense of belonging, he explained, is grounded in warm hospitality and right relationships. Acknowledging the historical significance of the year, Bishop Ireland urged all students to become architects of Kilbreda’s future, carrying the flame of St Brigid forward with strength, kindliness and a commitment to fostering right relationships with each other.

The school year kicked off with a myriad of activities designed explicitly to create a profound sense of belonging within our community. The Big Sister, Little Sister Program, led by remarkable graduates from the Class of 2023, has been instrumental in supporting Year 7 students as they make a smooth transition to Kilbreda, embodying the spirit of mentorship and sisterhood.

From the elegant Year 12 Formal to the heartwarming Year 7 Welcome Mass, the Year 9 Plate pastoral activity, the Term 1 Assembly, and, of course, our Opening School Mass – each event has played a crucial role in uniting us as a community. These gatherings have provided opportunities for both individual and collective celebration, fostering a sense of unity that is essential for a thriving and supportive school environment.

A memorable highlight was the entire school community coming together on 1st February to form a Brigid’s cross, a powerful symbol of peace and justice in our world. This collective act reinforced our commitment to fostering a sense of unity, purpose, and belonging within and beyond our school community.

As we continue our journey through the 2024 academic year, let us carry forward the spirit of belonging, embracing warm hospitality, and nurturing right relationships. Together, as a united Kilbreda community, we have the power to lay the foundations for future generations, ensuring that the flame of St Brigid continues to illuminate the path of education with strength, kindliness, and a profound sense of purpose.

Pathways to Success: Navigating the Middle Years of Schooling

Connecting with parents and carers during our Year 7 and 8 Parent Information Evening on Monday, 12 February was truly a rewarding experience. Throughout the evening, we delved into the profound notion that “it takes a village to raise a child.” Together, we explored collaborative strategies aimed at empowering deep learning, addressing the challenges of toxic perfectionism, navigating the complexities of friendships, integrating our Positive Behaviour for Learning Framework and nurturing the overall wellbeing of our young people.

The collective exploration of these essential topics emphasised the importance of a united approach in supporting the growth and development of our students. It was heartening to witness the shared commitment to creating an environment where each child can flourish academically, emotionally and socially.

For those who couldn’t attend or would like to revisit the valuable insights shared during the event, thie link below will take you to the presentation. Your active participation in these discussions and your dedication to collaborating in your child’s education play a crucial role in building a strong and supportive community. We appreciate your engagement and look forward to continuing our collective efforts in shaping a positive and enriching educational experience for our young learners.

Additionally, we look forward to uniting as a vibrant school community on Monday 26 February for our much-anticipated House Swimming Carnival. It promises to be a day filled with spirited competition, cheering and a celebration of our collective school spirit.

In the midst of these upcoming events, we urge everyone to prioritise self-care and wellbeing. Please take a moment to ensure you are nurturing your physical and emotional health, as a healthy community is a thriving community.
