Visual Arts, Design and Technologies Exhibition 2025

Student Reflection

On 9 October, Kilbreda College proudly hosted its annual Visual Arts and Design and Technologies Exhibition, a night that celebrated the creativity, dedication and talent of our students across all year levels. This year marked a special milestone with the inaugural Media screening held in the Auditorium, where six outstanding Year 12 films captivated the audience with their originality and storytelling.

The exhibition continued in the Hall, transformed into a vibrant gallery showcasing an impressive array of student work. From intricately decorated cakes by our Food Technology students to detailed Visual Communication and Design folios featuring floorplans, elevations, posters and app designs – every piece reflected the hard work and passion poured into it throughout the year.

Guests were treated to a diverse collection of creative works, including sculptures, paintings, photography, textiles and more. The evening concluded with the much-anticipated People’s Choice Awards, where attendees voted for their favourite pieces across all disciplines: Textiles, Visual Communication and Design, Art, Media and Food Technology.

The winners of the People’s Choice Awards for 2025:

  • Art: Gigi H (Year 12)
  • Visual Communication Design: Isabelle A (Year 11)
  • Media photography: Emma H (Year 12)
  • Media Short Film: Lucinda M (Year 12)
  • Textiles: Scarlett L (Year 12)
  • Food Technology: Sydney M (Year 10)

A highlight of the evening was the Annual Fashion Parade, where Year 10 Textiles and VCE Product Design and Technologies students took to the runway with garments inspired by historical, sustainable and ethical design practices. From corsets and evening wear to inclusive final garments, the show was a stunning display of craftsmanship and individuality.

Junior textiles students’ outstanding works were also displayed, including Year 7 designed t-shirts and reading pillows, Year 8 Aprons and Year 9 Pyjama pants. Each student should be incredibly proud of how their hard work and originality manifested into an amazing Fashion Parade.

A huge congratulations to all students involved and thank you to our community for supporting Visual Arts and Design and Technologies at Kilbreda.

Year 9 Food Tech Multicultural Food Buffet

Our Year 9 Food Technology students have been exploring the rich flavours and traditions of world cuisines. As part of their Multicultural Foods unit, each student researched the cuisine of a chosen country, discovering the unique ingredients, cooking methods and cultural influences that shape its dishes. Some students chose to further explore the rich flavours of their own cultural backgrounds such as the Ukraine and Greece.

To celebrate their learning, students prepared and shared a dish inspired by their studies at a Multicultural Buffet. The result was a vibrant and delicious showcase of global flavours, from Italian Handmade Gnocchi with a Napoli Sauce to Mexican Burrito Bowls, Ukrainian Deruny, Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls, Chinese Crispy Honey Chicken, Japanese Fried Rice and Pork Gyozas, Pad Thai, Indian Beef Kebabs, Dutch Poffertjes, German Pfeffernusse, South-African Milk Tarts, Eton Mess and French crepes. All dishes reflected both creativity and cultural appreciation.

It was a wonderful celebration of food, learning and diversity! Well done to all our wonderful chefs!

Year 9 Café Culture

On Monday 10 November the Year 9 Café Culture students showcased their culinary skills and hospitality expertise by hosting a beautiful high-tea event. The afternoon was a culmination of a term’s learning focused on café style food, customer service, menu planning and presentation and hosting techniques. In preparation for the event, students worked collaboratively to design and prepare a menu that reflected both traditional and modern high-tea influences.

The spread included a variety of savoury and sweet delights such as cheesy spinach, prosciutto and brie puffs, chicken ribbon sandwiches, cucumber and cheese sandwiches, tomato bruschetta, mini fruit tarts, lemon coconut slice, scones with jam and cream and mini lamingtons.

The high-tea provided a valuable opportunity for the students to put their practical skills into action and experience the satisfaction of serving their creations to real guests.

Teachers and the executive staff were very impressed by the students’ teamwork, professionalism and creativity.

Both Mrs Malignaggi and I are incredibly proud of them.

Year 11 Art Creative Practice

Student Artwork and Explanation

Below is an image that the entire Year 11 Art Creative Practice class collaborated on and contributed to.

‘Architectural collaboration’

Acrylic paint and posca on canvas

This artwork was inspired by the artistic works of David Hockney, the photography of Max Dupain, the bold colours palette of Howard Arkley, and the use of negative space as done by Mats Plevritis in Top Arts. From these four artists, we sourced and were also inspired by the many unique stylistic choices made by each artist. Uniting our classes’ individual artworks, we wished to design a collaborative piece that depicts the architectural aspects of Kilbreda College, as well as attempting to be reflective of the welcoming atmosphere of our school and the importance of our community and the belonging fostered by the school community.
