Cookie Gift Jars

A core component of VCAL, our ‘hands-on’ learning program for Year 11 and 12 students is a focus on Numeracy Skills. Over the last month, the Intermediate and Senior VCAL classes have been learning about the cost of purchasing different grocery items compared to the cost of making the gifts and cooking.

All classes worked on making Cookie Gift Jars. They followed instructions to build a jar of dry cookie ingredients. Each student finished off their jar with an instruction card and dressed the top. Many gave their jars to their mothers and significant women in their lives.

Here are the details if you would like to make them yourselves. https://celebratingsweets.com/mm-cookie-mix-in-a-jar/

Pancakes

The Intermediate VCAL classes put their price comparison skills to the test by finding the cost of making a batch of pancakes. Students separated into groups of two, mixed and cooked their pancakes. Once complete, they chose whether they wanted jam, butter, sugar and lemon for topping.

Recipe

1 cup of self-rising flour
¼ cup of caster sugar
1 egg
1 cup of milk
A teaspoon of vanilla essence
Mix and cook with oil or butter.

Immigration Museum: Enrichment Day

On 16 May, the Intermediate VCAL students jumped on the train to visit the Immigration Museum. Students learnt that people have been seeking refuge in Australia for over 100 years. Since 1945, Australia has accepted many refugees and displaced persons for resettlement. We participated in a workshop that highlighted stories of Asylum Seekers. Learning about the often difficult and harrowing journeys meant that students can bring a new understanding and empathy to those most vulnerable.

The programme focused on Australia’s resettlement policies and the role of UNHCR.  Students began to understand about  human rights of asylum seekers and refugees. It was an emotional afternoon filled with stories of refugees. The Year 12 students look forward to June 20 to experience the same excursion.

Student Reflection: Cookie Gift Jars

In Mathematics we created DIY cookie jars for Mother’s Day. The jar was very easy to do and fun to make. We added each ingredient layer by layer and sealed the jar with a colourful piece of fabric. I really liked being able to incorporate maths into cooking and creating something special for our mums and loved ones.
