Community Partnerships

St Patrick’s Primary School

On Tuesday 26 July, the VCAL Year 11 students commenced their community partnership with St Patrick’s Mentone. The two Projects classes are working with the Foundation (prep) students on a weekly basis. Each Kilbreda College student will plan, resource, and deliver a learning session that helps their prep student develop and consolidate social skills and fine motor skills. The VCAL students are required to establish a portfolio which contains lesson plans comprising learning intentions and success criteria. Additionally, they must include examples of the activities they intend to include in their lesson. After the lessons, the students will complete a self-reflection.

Yarrabah School

Every Thursday, the Year 12 VCAL Senior Kilbreda students, look forward to the arrival of the Yarrabah students. Currently, the students are working together to produce seven brilliant mosaic pieces that highlight the beauty and wonder of Australia’s unique environment. During our creative sessions, the room is abuzz with chatter, stories, laughs and shared ideas. It’s a great place to be as the atmosphere is one of warmth, cheerfulness and contentment. The artworks are progressing well and coming to life before our eyes.

Enrichment Day

Recently, both Intermediate and Senior VCAL students participated in a city tour with the Salvation Army as part of our Enrichment Day program.

We began the day inside participating in several activities, which prompted thinking about how homelessness might occur.

For the second part of the day, students participated in a guided walking tour that commenced at Bourke Street and toured the Parliament House and Treasury Gardens vicinity. As we navigated the city streets, we paused to engage in activities that helped to challenge stereotypes surrounding social hardship. Students learned about homelessness in Australia, hearing real stories on location.

The workshop was designed to challenge preconceptions, increase knowledge, inspire empathy and provide a platform for social justice activation. Students will work together to come up with a plan for their own commitment to social justice.
