Student Reflection: Mercy Place Mentone

On Enrichment Day, the Year 11 VM students paid a wonderful visit to Mercy Place Mentone. We spent the afternoon getting to know a warm and welcoming group of elderly residents, and we enjoyed playing a lively game of Scattergories together. It was both fun and meaningful to listen to their stories and hear about the many experiences they have had throughout their lives. Their memories, wisdom and sense of humour made the time we shared even more special.

The visit was not only enjoyable, but also a valuable reminder of the importance of connection across generations. We left feeling grateful for the opportunity to learn from them and to brighten their afternoon, even in a small way. Next time, we will be meeting again for an arts and crafts session, where we will be making bracelets together – something we are all definitely looking forward to. We hope to continue building these friendships and creating more special memories in the future.

Student Reflection: Enrichment Day Coastal Walk

On 9 February, the Year 12 VCE VM cohort ventured to the beautiful Bayside coast for a walk to promote team building, wellbeing and connection to the land and to each other. We watched a clip from the 1975 Australian film Picnic at Hanging Rock and linked parts of our walk to events in the film.

We began walking from Kilbreda towards the beach, then continued along the coast towards Beaumaris. We stopped at a large grassy area to sit and eat our lunch before venturing to the end of the coastline and walking back to Mentone.

This was an enlightening experience for our group as we begin our final year of school. It gave us the chance to connect in a space outside the Kilbreda classrooms.

I would like to acknowledge the teachers who made this experience possible for us: Ms Myers, Ms Hood and Ms Gamble.

Student Reflections: Being a Leader

I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to be a VCE VM Leader this year. My VCE journey has been a little different from that of my classmates, as I completed my first semester of Year 11 in mainstream VCE. I also chose to complete a Certificate II in Commercial Cookery as part of my VCE certificate, which meant I was away from school every Friday.

I struggled to keep up with my workload, and so that was when I considered joining VM. It presented an opportunity to continue my studies and still complete my VCE certificate, while working at a pace that better suited me.

I joined VCE VM in Term 3 and was immediately immersed in the work. I joined with one of my best friends, Darcy, and we were able to support each other and catch up on the tasks that had already begun.

I never imagined I would be a candidate for a VM Leader, but I decided to apply anyway. I thought that even if I missed out, at least I would have tried. I was very surprised to find out I had been selected as a VM Leader. I could not be happier.

I am excited for what this final year will bring for our cohort, and I look forward to working with Grace and Ms Gamble to create a meaningful and positive VM experience.

Year 12: VCE VM Leader

Applying to be a VM leader took courage because I had to step outside my comfort zone and believe in myself enough to put my name forward. When I was chosen, I felt really proud and grateful because it showed me that others believed in me too.

Since becoming a Leader, it has really helped grow my confidence. It has pushed me to speak up more, support others and believe in my abilities. Being a VM leader has made me feel more connected to the Kilbreda community and proud to contribute in a positive way.
