St Patrick’s Primary School Partnership

On Monday 17 July, the Year 11 VCE VM students commenced their community partnership with prep students from St Patrick’s Primary School, Mentone. During Semester 2, the students will travel to St Patrick’s and run two sessions per cycle. They will engage the preps in lessons that develop their fine motor and social skills.

For our Year 11 students, this project requires them to show initiative and good organisation skills. They need to plan and resource well-structured lessons that comprise learning intentions and success criteria. Post lesson, they will evaluate all elements of the lesson and consider the strengths and areas for further development.

With the sessions they have already had, it’s been gratifying to watch the students from both schools work together with such positivity and enthusiasm. When we arrived for our first session a few weeks ago, the prep children could hardly contain their excitement. We are extremely proud of the Year 11 students; who have represented our College with distinction.

Enrichment Day – FareShare

Our Year 12 VCE VM students visited the FareShare kitchens in early July. FareShare is an organisation that has been cooking free, nutritious meals for people doing it tough since 2001. They believe that every Australian deserves a nutritious meal, regardless of their circumstances or location.

Each year, FareShare transforms rescued, donated and homegrown food into millions of delicious, healthy meals that feed dignity and wellbeing for Australians experiencing hardship. A homestyle meal shows that somebody cares, and has an immediate impact. The need for meal relief has never been higher with the soaring cost of living, frequent natural disasters and the lingering effects of the pandemic hurting millions of Australians.

Supporting FareShare means we are not just feeding someone in need. We are giving them a ready-to-eat meal which takes the worry out of going hungry and the stress out of cooking.

Our Year 12 VCE VM students completed the following tasks during their shift.

  • Folded aprons and tea towels
  • Prepared badges for the next volunteer groups
  • Tore 5 boxes of mushrooms
  • Grated 2kg of parmesan cheese
  • Chopped 40kg of carrot
  • Chopped 30kg of capsicum
  • Washed 40kg of celery
  • Chopped 10kg celery and broccoli
  • Assembled and packed 165 vegan stroganoff meals
  • Assembled and packed 195 satay noodle meals
  • Helped unload and reload the delivery van

It is our hope that their experience in the FareShare Kitchen has inspired them and reinforced the idea that anyone and everyone can help others who are less fortunate.

Bake Sale

On 8 August, the VCE VM 002 class held a Bake Sale which raised money for Saltbush. Saltbush is a not- for-profit charitable organisation. Money raised will ensure restorative holidays and experiences for those who need it most. In the weeks leading up to the bake sale, the students worked to bake a selection of slices and cookies. Through this, the students raised $404. We want to thank the Kilbreda community and all those who supported us in achieving this amount.
