Sustainability
Kilbreda’s ResourceSmart School goal for this year is to address our waste management. Already we have conducted a waste and litter audit, held whole school assemblies to raise awareness of the results of these audits and promoted actions to help fix the problems. One area of focus is green or organic waste.
It’s not only our students taking initiative in helping to reduce our waste. Staff member Elaine Bracciale (Creative Arts Assistant) noticed that food waste in the Food Technology Kitchen wasn’t always making its way into the organics waste stream (green bins or compost pile). She contacted Kingston Council who delivered seven small compost caddies for the Food Technology Kitchen. Our Maintenance Team also organised for a green organics bin to be placed near the external door so that students and staff can easily dispose of organic waste in the right place. Thanks Elaine and Maintenance!
Tim from the Maintenance Team asked how he could help with the compost piles we have in the vegetable garden. We asked him if he could turn over the existing compost to aerate it, and then start layering the huge amounts of autumn leaves falling from the trees with green lawn clippings. You can see that we have already built up one side of the compost area, ready to leave them to rest for a few weeks. We will use the resulting compost in the vegetable garden beds and around the school garden. Thanks for your hard work, Tim!

The SEALs will help get our vegetable garden ready for spring in Term 3. We welcome any students or staff who would like to help. Look out for notices announcing which lunchtimes we will be in the garden each week.
