Student Environmental Forum

Student Reflection

In September, six Kilbreda Sustainability Leaders attended a forum for local schools hosted by Mentone Girls’ Grammar. We got to meet with peers from St Bede’s College and Mentone Girls’ Grammar to discuss all the different initiatives we have run and share tips and ideas with each other. We found out that, like us, the other schools had done thrift stores and that they had faced similar challenges. Some interesting events that the other schools ran were bake sales to raise money for environmental groups and beach clean ups too.

We listened to a speaker who talked about her experience in fast fashion. She had taken a trip through Vietnam to learn more sustainable ways of making clothes. She walked for 10 months through Vietnam, Laos and surrounding countries. On her trip she got to meet many locals who shared their clothes-making techniques. In one community, it takes them a year to make one garment – growing it from the seed, harvesting the plant, threading the fibres and sewing and embroidering the final garment.

It was a really great experience working with the other schools and we hope we can have more initiatives together in the future.
