The Year in Sport

2022 saw things return to normal and we were able to, once again, participate in all sporting events. It was so great to see so many students take up the challenge by trialing and participating in the many sporting opportunities that were offered throughout the year.

Without a doubt this was our most successful year and we congratulate all students for not just their sporting prowess but also the excellent sportsmanship and the impressive way in which they conducted themselves in all events.

VET Sport and Recreation – St Kilda Football Club

On Wednesday 9 November our VET Sport and Recreation class had the opportunity to get a taste of what a High Performance Athlete does week-to-week for recovery. Our class traveled to RSEA Park by bus and were fortunate enough to use the new Danny Frawley Centre, where we spent our hour productively.

AFLW stars, Grace Kelly and Olivia Vesely took us through how to do a hot-to-cold treatment. We spent two minutes in freezing ice cold water (five degrees), before dunking ourselves in a nice, warm, heated pool for another two minutes. Then we repeated the process again. We learnt that this constricts and dilates our blood vessels, allowing for blood flow. Therefore, this is a common treatment that athletes do.

Another recovery exercise we tried was using the Nautic Compression Boots, as well as the Massage Guns. A class favourite was the Infrared Sauna, which is generated by light not heat and includes colourful lights. Each light represented a different vitamin enhancer. However, the Infrared Sauna was more like a little party room with the built in speakers and Bluetooth!

Overall, we had a great time at the Danny Frawley Centre. It was amazing to get the opportunity to put our knowledge to action.
