Data Analysis

‘In the context of education, data is any information that we can glean about teaching and learning. To enhance schools, educators must consistently use data to determine where they are and what needs to be done next. For data to be effective, they must be widely available and be used to affect instructional and policy changes.’

‘Using Data: to Focus on Instructional Improvement’
Hawker Brownlow Education

Both qualitative and quantitative data is an important component of performance and development. This year, the College is establishing a Data Analysis Team. The focus of this team is to implement a data plan which establishes systematic methods of collecting and interpreting evidence to identify excellent practices in learning. They will also support a high-level understanding of the various data sources available to the College and the way that these can be used for school enhancement and student growth. The team will build teacher data literacy skills and translate this into practice. They will work with teaching staff through the Professional Learning Communities to highlight areas of focus, and growth.

Our data analysis this year has begun with the VCE/VCAA data analysis. VCE staff met at the beginning of the term to discuss the VCAA reports for their subject area. Discussions of strengths and weaknesses, strategies and next steps were documented. Further discussion will take place with Learning Leaders, the Senior Pathways Leader and myself to further enhance student learning and outcomes.

Recently, I attended a briefing by the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority (VCAA) to discuss/review the VCE data. The emphasis was the importance of a data culture within schools. The following slide resonated with the College’s focus and emphasis on data.

I look forward to the continued dialogue about data, areas to focus and to enhance, with the College community.
