Exploring Generative AI in Education: A Staff Development Day with Leon Furze
On Friday 29 August, staff at the College had the opportunity to engage in professional learning sessions with education and AI expert, Leon Furze. This was the second in a series of presentations designed to support our ongoing journey in understanding Generative AI (GenAI).
The day began with a focus on the relationship between AI and assessment. Staff explored how assessment is not a static task, but a dynamic process – one that can include the use of AI as a tool without replacing the need for critical and creative thinking. Leon highlighted the importance of maintaining rigour and depth in learning, even as we begin to harness the capabilities of new technologies.
An important part of the session centred on AI and student wellbeing, including an overview of the various platforms that students can access. Together, we discussed how we can better understand these platforms to ensure they are being used appropriately, and in ways that enhance rather than hinder learning and wellbeing.
The day concluded with an engaging Q&A panel who addressed the challenges and opportunities that GenAI presents in education environments. Staff shared insights and posed questions about:
- The current and future use of AI in classrooms
- AI and its impact on assessment practices
- How AI can support teachers in planning and content delivery
- How we can educate students to use AI with ethical awareness and discernment.
This professional learning day was both challenging and thought provoking, encouraging all staff to think deeply about how we guide our community through the opportunities and challenges presented by GenAI. As we move forward, we are committed to developing clear College guidelines to ensure the responsible and purposeful use of GenAI that supports the growth, wellbeing and integrity of all students.
