AMC Maths Challenge

During Term 2, 35 eager mathematicians participated in the ‘AMC Maths Challenge’. They were given six problems to solve over the duration of four weeks. The mathematicians were able to discuss the questions with a partner. However, they were not allowed to have any assistance from teachers, parents and siblings. Many hours were spent solving problems involving six pin bowling score cards, polar coordinate explorations, colour combinations of flags, factor cards, greatest prime factors and more.

Congratulations to all students who participated in this event. The top three students from Year 7 were Theodora N, Patricia D and Keira B, and from Year 8, Emma G, Zara S and Hannah R.

Student Reflection

I have been very privileged this year to have been selected to participate in the 2023 Australian Maths Challenge (AMC). The AMC is a problem solving program which runs over the course of 3-4 weeks. All students receive a ‘Student Problem Booklet’ featuring 6 unique problems. This year was my first year participating in the AMC. I loved the fact that you could work in pairs as I was able to discuss my solutions with another student. Additionally, though the questions were challenging, I wasn’t stressed knowing that we had 4 weeks to solve them. Overall, I found this experience to be fun and stimulating. I definitely want to take part in the AMC next year.

Kilbreda Factor X Competition

We look forward to running the ‘Kilbreda Factor X Competition’ next term. Mathematicians from Years 7 to 9 are invited to compete in this competition, where they are able to work independently or with a partner. Further details will be provided to students over the next couple of weeks.
