Zero Co Sustainable Schools Fundraising Program

Some facts about plastic: 380 Million metric tonnes of Single Use Plastic (SUP) is produced. Around 14M tonnes end up in our oceans. Australians use on average 3109 bottles worth of SUP every year, one of the highest per capita globally.

  • 13% is recycled
  • 87% is sent to landfill

For the past week and a half, our College has been working with Zero Co’s Sustainable Schools Program.
The program is designed to do two things:

  • Raise money for our school
  • Educate our students about sustainability.

We are incredibly proud of this campaign and the first school in Victoria to partner with Zero Co. To get involved and support this initiative please head over to our Sustainable Schools fundraising page. The products are beautiful and the sustainable packaging is vibrant and modern. We know you’ll love these products!

Our College will earn up to $40 profit on every purchase you make, and for every $10 raised Zero Co will pull 1KG of rubbish out of the ocean on our school’s behalf.

Please check out the site below if your family would like to participate in this initiative. We are aiming to raise money to help us purchase new indoor recycling bins to help reduce our contribution to landfill waste.

Year 9 Environmental Science and Sustainability Class

This semester, the students have looked at how people have created changes in history to help them understand what might be required to bring about change to improve our use of Earth’s resources. In small groups, they have decided on an action they can do or promote to help Kilbreda become more sustainable.

Their projects will run over the next few weeks and will be posted as a blog on our webpage. The projects include:

  • Making informative signs for our new outdoor bins so that students can make the correct choice when disposing of waste
  • Running ‘bring your own container’ days in the canteen
  • Upcycling bottle tops to create an artwork
  • Raising money to adopt a koala at Year 9.

Vegetable Garden

Our Vegetable Garden is enjoying the (slightly) warmer weather and rain. The Garden Club and Year 9 Environmental Science class have worked hard to weed the beds and plant seedlings and seeds, which are now producing broad beans, cabbages, lettuce, spinach and herbs. We have tomato seedlings in the greenhouse ready to plant out in the next couple of weeks. The Year 9 students even turned over the huge compost pile which was very impressive!

Living Justice

At the end of Term 3, Year 10 to 12 Homerooms collected sanitary items, shampoo, soaps, lotions, toothpaste etc and put together our own version of ‘Happy Boxes’ in calico bags. These bags of items will be distributed to vulnerable women in communities of need. The generosity of our students was overwhelming with over 20 bags of items collected!

Our next charity focus will be on our annual St Vincent de Paul Christmas hampers. These hampers are put together and distributed to families doing it tough in our local community. Further details to come shortly.
