Library News

Winter has arrived and we, here in the Library, are extolling the benefits of snuggling up with a good book! More will be said of this in our next newsletter write-up!

Displays

Over the past month we have been blessed to be able to display the wonderful collection of Brigid’s Crosses, which are the work of our talented Year 7 students. The Library is a wonderful space to showcase the students’ work and we are grateful to the Year 7 Religious Education teachers for asking us to host this.

Reconciliation Week

The Library is supporting Reconciliation Week with displays and bookmarks and has also bought a recent book by Frank Brennan, which outlines the pros and cons of the upcoming referendum.  We aim to keep the First Nations collection current and relevant to events in our country.

Synopsis: Australians will soon be asked to vote in a referendum asking ‘Do you support an alteration to the Constitution that establishes an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice?’ Frank Brennan has been an advocate for Indigenous rights for 40 years. Here he shows the difficult path travelled by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders and their supporters to get to this question. In the past, advocates argued for changes to Commonwealth Parliament’s powers to legislate for Indigenous Australians and to the capacity of the High Court to strike down racially discriminatory laws. They also offered changes to the Constitution that would acknowledge Indigenous history, reality and aspirations. All those proposals are now replaced with the Voice. But is it to be a Voice to Parliament or a Voice to Parliament and to Government? Would the focus be only on special laws applying to the First Australians, or on any other relevant matters? This book fairly outlines both the ‘Yes’ case and the ‘No’ case, so that voters can make up their own minds before casting their vote in the referendum.

Our Sustainability Section and Our New Puppets

The Sustainability collection is now easier to see and our Puppets have arrived!

The Australian animal puppets have arrived and have proven an instant hit with our students.  They were mostly donated and are a great addition to the others which had been bought many years ago by Mary Stack, previous Principal.

Chess Club and Anime / Manga Club

The Manga Club continues to be hosted in the Library by Mr Rohit Kumar on Fridays and we now are also hosting a Chess Club on Mondays.

To support this club, the Library has bought a couple of well-regarded Chess books to supplement the existing small collection.

Chess Club

For the first Chess Club session, there were 16 students in attendance. Students from Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 came down to play Chess against their friends and other students who were there. We had both experienced players and students who had never played chess before watch and learn how to play.
There was a lot of laughter and great conversations about the game.

Chess Club is for everyone regardless of skill level. All are welcome to come and play or just watch others play and  you can cheer on. You can play against your friends or play against other members of the club.

It was a great 1st session, I look forward to running Chess Club each week throughout Term 2.
