Semester 1 Examinations
Consistent and early preparation for assessments enables students to gradually absorb and understand material, reducing stress and the need for last-minute cramming. Early preparation enhances long-term memory retention and gives time to identify and address areas of that need greater explanation and practice. Reviewing each lesson and asking questions to clarify further is the first step to enhance learning and build on both the working and long-term memory. Effective strategies to assist in information retrieval include spaced repetition, which involves reviewing material at increasing intervals to strengthen memory; active recall, where students test themselves consistently throughout the term; and the use of mnemonic devices to make complex information easier to remember. Additionally, organising study sessions with breaks can boost focus and retention. Listed below are some examples of retrieval techniques – it is important to mix up the retrieval techniques during the assessment and exam preparation time:
- Flashcards
- Brain dumps
- Testing with knowledge organisers
- Completing past exam papers
- Answering questions aloud
- Quizzing
Next week all parents/carers of students in Years 9 to 11 will receive an email outlining the upcoming Semester 1 examination period.
Students will also receive access to the examination timetable and the navigators to assist with their preparation.

By implementing these retrieval techniques throughout the term, students will enhance their confidence in their learning and ability to retain and retrieve information, and their overall performance in assessments.
