VET Sport and Recreation Bike Camp

After our last Health and PE article, the Unit 1/2 VET Sport and Recreation class headed off on their Bike Camp. We all began on the bike path towards Frankston and it wasn’t long before we were all soaked, but spirits were high and the class arrived at Kananook Station in no time. We loaded the bikes on to the trailer and were able to dry and thaw out a little on the drive to McCrae Lighthouse where we unloaded and rode the lovely Bay Trail to Rye Pier. A lunch of hot chips to warm our insides before catching the ferry from Sorrento to Queenscliff where we set up our tents. This proved to be quite a challenge in the windy conditions but the class worked well to help each other get this done before cooking up a storm on the BBQ and engaging in a very vocal card game of spoons.

Day 2 started a little rough as we were all suffering the effects of not much sleep due to the wind and rain that persisted throughout the night. We drove to Jan Juc and then rode along the beach path through Torquay before riding on roads and bike paths and into Barwon Heads before stopping for lunch at Ocean Grove. A quick bite to eat and on to our surfing lesson at Ocean Grove beach, which was great fun. All had a great time battling the waves with many riding some great ones into the beach. Back to Queenscliff for showers and dinner and a walk around the marina before another hectic game of spoons.

A much better sleep had us all raring to go on the last day and we packed up camp before heading to Geelong to ride the picturesque Barwon River Trail. All rode at a great pace and before we knew it we were back on the bus heading back to Mentone. The camp was a great opportunity for students to practically implement some of the work that we had covered in class relating to Work Health & Safety and Daily Organisation as the students planned most of the details of the camp. It was a great experience for all involved and I congratulate all students on their positivity and the resilience they showed in some really trying conditions.

Year 11 Physical Education Excursion

In late March, the Year 11 Physical Education classes made their way to RSEA Park, home of the St Kilda Football Club. The Year 11 students were studying injury prevention techniques particularly injuries of the muscular and skeletal systems. As part of our arrangement with the club they presented two sessions to the students.

The first was called ‘The Elite Energy’ session with added injury prevention in a High-Performance environment. In this session, the two AFLW players presenting to the group, Hannah Priest and Georgia Patrikios, ran the students through the training programs that they participate in as part of elite level sport. This included a focus on the training of the mind, preparation including nutrition, analysis of activity and recovery.

The students then took part in a practical injury prevention session that had the students take part in the exercises that the AFLW team completes as part of their warm-up routine before a game. The classes had an amazing time visiting the club and gained a lot of applied knowledge in preparation for their exams.

Year 8 Health

The Year 8 Health cohort are currently working through a vitally important cybersafety unit that helps them to understand the meaning behind being a good digital citizen. They learn to understand cyberbullying behaviour and impact on others. This helps them to make responsible decisions on digital devices particularly on the impact of sexting. We encourage parents to engage in discussion with their daughters about this unit to encourage them as they work through the challenges of today’s society.

Upcoming Events

Year 7 Physical Education swimming excursions will begin soon as will the Year 10 Health and Physical Education visits to South Pacific Health Club to participate in a range of gym sessions. Standby for more details.
