Health and Physical Education

There is lots happening in our Health and PE classes as always. Some of our Year 7 and 9 Health classes have already had their incursion workshop with Elephant Ed, some classes will have this session over the coming weeks.

At Year 7, our Health classes are focusing on gender, identity and respectful relationships, with a workshop topic on ‘Identity.’ At Year 9, their focus this term is on sex education and healthy relationships, with a workshop topic on ‘Sexual Relationships and Consent’. Elephant Ed deliver engaging sex education workshops that are age appropriate, evidence-based and aim to empower our young people to make informed, positive and safe decisions about sexuality, relationships and growing up.

We received some lovely feedback from the presenters on the sessions they have delivered so far:

‘Just a quick email to say thank you so much for having us at Kilbreda College yesterday. Hannah and Ella mentioned they were blown away by how welcoming and engaged both the staff and students were. So, a big thank you to you.’

Following each workshop, our students fill in a feedback form on the session. We have received some great messages of feedback from the students:

‘Love how interactive it was. Great workshop and something we needed to learn.’

‘I thought that it was really educational, and I felt comfortable with younger people coming in to teach us.’

‘It was really informative and helpful.’

‘This was really helpful because I’ve always wondered about this stuff and it was really fun to have younger people.’

‘It was really helpful and easy to share.’

‘They made me feel open and comfortable to talk freely.’

‘It was a good safe environment.’

Our Junior PE classes have been enjoying a range of activities and sessions run by Proactivity. These programs offer a range of activities and allow our students to experience different and engaging activities that promote health and wellbeing through physical activity. By offering these alternative programs to our PE classes, we hope to inspire and encourage our students to lead an active and healthy life.

Our Year 8 students recently participated in a cheerleading unit, which is not just fun but provides benefits in strength and endurance, flexibility, coordination and teamwork skills. As it’s a whole-body cardio workout, it includes stretching exercises to develop flexibility, engages students in a sequence of movements to improve motor skill coordination and requires everyone to work as a team and develop good communication skills.

Our Year 9 and 10 PE classes have recently completed a self-defence unit, which not only teaches the important skills that allow our young people to defend themselves, but establishes the self-awareness and awareness of potentially dangerous situations.
