Fit For Life – Year 9

In Year 9, students were given the opportunity to select Fit for Life as one of their electives. In this class, they have taken part in different types of experiences in physical activity like social, health and fitness, cathartic, aesthetic, competitive, recreation, vertiginous and ascetic. They have the opportunity to go out of class and explore different types of activities. As a class, they go for a walk (social), head to the gym for a Body Balance class (health and fitness), box as a class (cathartic), and play games (competitive).

Most recently they headed to Melbourne Cable Park to have a crack at the High Ropes course (vertiginous).

Physical Education – Year 10

In order to help the Year 10 students meet their Physical Activity guidelines, they have been participating in a range of recreational activities that, in adult life, require very little planning, equipment or cost. Embracing the ‘enablers’ in our physical environment has been a focus with classes walking down to Mentone Beach for some ‘Ultimate Frisbee’ or even sandcastle building competitions, as well as taking the bus to Mordialloc Beach to take part in some beach volleyball. Much fun was had by all!.

VET Sport and Recreation Bike Camp

In Term 1 we were lucky enough to take part in a bike camp. Bike camp was an amazing experience over three days. We started our camp with a 15km bike ride from Kilbreda to Seaford Football Club. After a short bus trip we then rode from McCrae to Rye, then hopped on the ferry to our final destination, Queenscliff. The next day we spent the day surfing at Ocean Grove Lifesaving Club. We took part in surfing lessons as a class, which was definitely a highlight of the trip! We then rode back to Queenscliff from Ocean Grove and went out for dinner on our last night. The next day we drove home; however, we stopped off at Barwon River for a lesson in stand up paddle boarding. This camp was one of my favourite camps, which I’ll never forget!

Upcoming Events

Year 7 Physical Education

Swimming excursions will begin soon. Our students will walk down to Mentone Girls Grammar to take part in four sessions during class time with the hope of earning their Victorian Water Safety certificate, which includes safe water entries and rescue methods.

Year 7 Health

In Health we will soon see the Year 7 students take part in an ‘Elephant Ed’ session dubbed ‘Identity”. This session will broach some difficult topics introducing the concept of identity, sexuality and attraction. It is with this program that we wish to meet our Brigidine values promoting acceptance and equality of all people.

Year 8 Health

During this term, our Year 8 Health classes will participate in a session titled ‘Porn V Reality‘ as a crucial part of the ‘Safety/Cyber Safety’ unit. Throughout this unit, students have been exploring e-safety, social media safety, and the concept of sexting. Additionally, a component of the unit is focused on pornography (being sexualised images), aiming to delve into the increased exposure to, the prevalent issues of violence and sexism within mainstream media. Understanding the detrimental impact these images can have on individuals’ sexual knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors is of utmost importance for our young students.

The unit helps them to understand the meaning behind being a good digital citizen. They learn to understand cyberbullying behaviour and impact on others. This helps them to make responsible decisions on digital devices particularly on the impact of sexting.

We encourage parents to engage in discussion with their children about this unit to encourage them as they work through the challenges of today’s society.

Year 10 Health and PE

These students will have time towards the end of the semester, juggling exams and Futures Week. To help them unwind and relieve stress, the PE department has organised three exercise sessions including guided sessions of Body Pump, Body Balance, Spin, and, for a lucky few, Zumba at South Pacific Gym in Mentone.

Important Reminder

Once more a reminder as this has still been causing some issues.

With all of the excursions taking place, I want to remind parents of the difference between consent and participation. If a student is unable to participate in an excursion for whatever reason, as with any PE lesson, we would ask you to simply issue them with a note or contact their teacher directly.

Consent should still be given in that circumstance so that the student can attend the venue and continue to be supervised by their class teacher. Students not given consent cause difficulties regarding supervision.
