English

The English faculty is full of activity at the moment, as students respond to different opportunities and challenges. Many of our students and teachers are busy adjusting to new study designs in Literature (Units 1 to 4) and English (Units 1&2).

Meanwhile, our junior students and debaters are grappling with the nerves and excitement of public speaking whilst our budding English Language students are uncovering the fascinating complexities of our language. It is an exciting time for our students as they broaden their experiences and cultural horizons, as noted in the Debating report (within this issue) and the English Language report (below).

At this stage in the term, we temporarily farewell Ms Amy Masters as she departs for parental leave. Ms Louise Mansfield will be coordinating Debating for the remainder of 2023.

English Language Report

In Year 11 English Language we are busy exploring the subsystems of language and how these can be applied to a variety of written and spoken texts to analyse the meaning and functions of those texts. We are putting our linguistics hats on for the first time and enjoying viewing English Language with a scientific lens.

In Year 12, the differences between informal language and formal language are being compared and analysed, considering the function that formality plays in a wide variety of discourse. Students are interested and engaged in the content and demonstrating fantastic achievements in their engagement with the study design.
