Thinking’s all right if you have the time for it. Joan Lindsay, Picnic at Hanging Rock

Creating opportunities for young people to think is at the heart of the English curriculum. Our school year has begun with students engaging with diverse literary texts that invite them to explore worlds different to their own. Engaging with unfamiliar places, different eras, beliefs and values provides students with a broad perspective of the human experience and encourages them to appreciate how society, and human nature, has evolved over time. As well as helping students to develop empathy for others, our texts also generate discussion about where progress can still be made in our world.

As well as discussing abstract ideas, we love nothing more than bringing the texts to life for our students. This week, inspired by their teacher, Ms Nicole Everett, the Year 12 Literature class embarked on their own Valentine’s picnic, re-enacting a famous scene from the classic Australian novel, ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock‘.

Student Reflection

The first text that the Units 3&4 Literature class is studying is ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock‘ by Joan Lindsay. The turning point of the text takes place in the Australian bush in 1900 on Valentine’s Day at Hanging Rock, where three schoolgirls go missing after exploring.

To deepen our understanding (and take away some of the stress of Year 12 studies), we had a picnic with the same love heart shaped cake that is described in the text. With free rein of the costume department, we found hats, dresses, and parasols to fully immerse ourselves in the experience. Then after having some of our cake and biscuits, we discussed the text as a group and shared our opinions and differing takes on the text. A great time was had by everyone!

There are many other ways that our team strive to enhance the learning experience of students. In Year 12 we offer the ‘Hour of Power’ program to support VCE English students as they navigate the challenges of their final year.

We are excited to offer an enhanced program for 2024. Every Day 6, students are invited to attend after school workshops and lectures that will support their understanding of key knowledge and skills required for English SACs across the year and for the end of year examination. Sessions will take place in the Kildare Centre on alternate Mondays between 3:30pm to 4:30pm. Light refreshments will be provided. Please encourage your daughter/s to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to ensure they are studying effectively and building confidence across the year.
