MACS Creative Arts Exhibition

The Creative Arts Exhibition showcases the wonderful artwork of primary and secondary students in the Archdiocese of Melbourne. It reflects their creativity in a broad range of impressive and inspiring works across various disciplines, including painting, photography, sculpture, fashion and film.

At the end of 2023, we entered three pieces into the Creative Arts Exhibition for 2024. One of those were from the Design and Technologies Learning Area. Congratulations to our students who were selected to have their work displayed at the exhibition.

Year Level Update

We have had a wonderful start to 2024 introducing Year 7 students to Textiles and Year 8 students to Food Technology. Classrooms have been filled with enthusiastic students ready to learn new skills.

Textiles

With 2024 well on its way, students studying Textiles have started their projects for the semester. Students in each year level have individual and unique tasks they complete, which allows them to collaborate with each other, unleash their inner designer and express themselves through creative textiles.

Year 7
These students have begun their first Textiles classes at Kilbreda with the opportunity to create a reading pillow with their initial on the front and design a t-shirt where the design is then printed onto a top they can wear.

Year 8
Our Year 8 students are making an apron. In their second year of Textiles, students are more comfortable using the sewing machines.

Year 9
The Year 9 Passion for Fashion class are tasked with making and designing a pair of pyjama pants and tie-dye tote bag.

Year 10
The Year 10 students are challenged with researching and taking inspiration from an Australian fashion designer to base a corset design aroundm which they will make later on in the semester.

Year 11
Upon beginning their Unit 1 tasks, these students were grouped together in small groups where they are beginning to collaborate on a line of cohesive designs that are inspired by, and represent, a chosen decade.

Year 12
Our most senior students have started researching needs and opportunities within the global market to determine the product they are going to produce later on in the year. They have been working on their folios diligently and have recently been able to take part in an online folio masterclass, where they were able to understand what the requirements are for folios and how they can place themselves in the best possible position for success in PDT Textiles this year.

Food

Year 8 Food Technology
As this year is the first time the Year 8 students are experiencing Food Technology, they are developing new kitchen and knife skills. Using their new skills they have so far made chocolate truffles, fruit kebabs and Fattoush Salad. In the next couple of days, they will be using a microwave as a new cooking method and making loaded potatoes.

Year 9 Café Culture
The Year 9 Café Culture students are working on cooking, photographing and building their own recipe folios. They have so far created Bliss Smoothie Bowls, Tik Tok inspired baked Oats and DYO bagels, filling them with a variety of delicious options.

Year 10 Food Studies
The Year 10 Food students have just completed their first topic on managing food safety. In class they have investigated food safety and hygiene, food contamination and food poisoning. In practical classes, they focused on how to produce their food safely and have produced Chicken Sandwiches, Chicken Caesar Salad and Rice flour and Banana Pancakes.

Students are currently learning about the importance of healthy eating in relation to the Australian dietary guidelines and will be designing a nutrition and healthy salad. The Year 11 students have also been developing their cooking skills by making Corn Fritters with Avocado and Mango Salsa, Moroccan Lamb Backstrap and Vegetable Pasties.

Year 11 and 12 VCE Food Studies

Year 11 Food Studies students are embarking on their first assessment outcome this term and have been cooking recipes whilst looking at ancient ingredients and the origins of food in society.

So far this term, the Year 12 students have been learning about the science of food, digestive system and the importance of gut health. To develop our understanding, in practical classes the Year 12 students have made Wontons and used four different cooking methods to assess the different sensory properties. They have also made gut healthy pancakes and compared them to regular pancake recipes and a salad containing pre and probiotics. After completing their first SAC, Year 12 students are currently learning about the Australian Dietary Guidelines.
