Year 9

Year 9 Food Technology

There have been smiles all round in Year 9 Food Technology as the students design, plan, generate, produce and create their own pancake stack for their major assessment task this term. The design brief specified that they were to research and subsequently add fruit and an additional ingredient to the batter to enhance its flavour, a sauce or spread to be placed over the pancakes and at least one additional ingredient as the topping. They were encouraged to work on a strategy so that the pancakes were uniform in size and able to be stacked. We even had a visit from Ms Smyth and Sister Lia, which the Year 9 students really appreciated. There were many wonderful and unique flavour and textual combinations such as passionfruit, raspberry and cinnamon, blackberry, mint and chocolate, Biscoff, banana and cinnamon. We now have our very own Pancake Parlour here at Kilbreda! Well done Year 9 Food Technology Students!

Year 9 Café Culture

Our delightful Year 9 Café Culture students are continuing to excel with their designing and production skills as shown for their major assessment task – A Grazing Box! The students paced themselves over a three-week period making gourmet sausage rolls, decorating cupcakes and making a sandwich of their choice. One student, Amelia, even made her own focaccia with jalapenos for her sandwich component of the task. There was chaos, busyness and lots of planning, but most of all – it was fun!

Now it’s onto our next topics: A Study on Coffee and Food Styling!

Year 11 Food Studies

The Year 11 students have been working on their second assessment, which involved responding to a design brief where they researched a traditional dumpling from different cultures around the world. After completing their research, the students prepared and cooked their dumplings, then shared them with the class.

Year 10 Art

On Friday 28 February, I was given the opportunity to learn about Yayoi Kusama as a part of my Year 10 Art studies at the NGV art exhibition about this Japanese artist. Upon arriving at the gallery, we had the pleasure of listening to a 45 minute lecture detailing key events of Kusama’s life and her exploration of 2D and 3D materials from childhood to present. Once having a deeper understanding of the artist, my peers and I were able to immerse ourselves in Kusama’s interactive spaces and view her sculptures and paintings. I found it incredibly interesting to see the variety of subject matter and materials at use throughout the exhibition, and how each piece was entirely unique, but common motifs were evident, such as dots. My friends and I enjoyed entering her infinity rooms and looking closer at her pieces to gain inspiration for our own art. Overall, it was an eye opening, fun and memorable experience, which enhanced our understanding of the artist, and inspired us and our own artistic endeavours.

Year 11 Media

In Year 11 Media, students are currently exploring the theme of Media Representations through the lens of the Teenage Experience. They are analysing how meaning is communicated through various media forms and how audiences interpret media to shape their understanding of themselves and the world around them. As part of this exploration, students have compared a film and a photographic sequence to investigate how teenagers have been portrayed across different societies and time periods. Following this, they were tasked with creating their own photographic sequences that convey a central theme, narrative, or message.

For Area of Study 2: Media Forms in Production, students will take part in an excursion to ACMI to view the Futures and Other Fictions exhibit and The Moving Image exhibition. In addition, they will collaborate in small groups to capture photography in Melbourne’s CBD, which will contribute to their magazine product.

Year 12 Media

The Year 12 Media class has been hard at work on their first major Media SAC of the year – video essays. Currently studying the 1972 musical Cabaret, the class has been breaking down each scene and creating detailed notes to support their essays. The class has just completed the post-production phase of their video essays and are continuing to build on their understanding of the film in preparation for our second SAC of Outcome 1.  The whole class has found Cabaret both relevant and enjoyable to study.

VCE Food Studies

Recently, our Unit 3 & 4 Food Studies class collaborated to research the dietary requirements for different life stages. We were each assigned a specific life stage and worked in groups to tackle the task together, honing skills like communication and teamwork. We discovered that sharing and reciting our findings with friends was a fun and effective way to learn, and it’s been helping us prepare for our upcoming SAC.

To present our research, we created engaging and informative posters. These posters were a great way to demonstrate our learning and allowed us to visually condense the information. By dividing the research across different life stages, each group was able to focus on specific dietary needs, making it easier for us to study for the SAC in a more interactive and engaging format.

VCE Product Design and Technologies

On 13 March, Marilyn Vincent, the College’s Proxime Accessit of 2024, visited the current Product Design and Technologies Unit 3 & 4 class to share her experience and insights on how she succeeded and achieved a Study Score of 49 in this subject. Marilyn’s work is featured in the Top Design Showcase as part of the VCE Season of Excellence, with her folio highlighting a stunning garment that blended Indian and Australian heritage in fashion.

During her visit, Marilyn gave a presentation in Ms Cresp’s class, offering valuable guidance and support for the year ahead. She emphasised the importance of referencing the study design and key skills when reporting on our unique ideas, while also boosting our confidence in structuring our folio. Marilyn truly acted as a ‘big sister’ figure, offering her experience and encouraging us to reach out for advice.

In addition to Marilyn’s guidance, we’ve been developing our folios through an online webinar, which helps us navigate the textbook and refine our understanding. Currently, we’re focusing on identifying the needs of our end-user demographic and transitioning into drawing and visualising our designs. We’re excited to apply Marilyn’s advice, continue learning from Ms Cresp, and put in the effort to perfect our garments for the upcoming Fashion Show!
