Season of Excellence

The VCE Season of Excellence is a five-month annual festival showcasing outstanding senior secondary student work from Victorian schools. The Season presents work created by VCE and VET students in Design, Technology, Research, Multimedia, Cinematic, Visual and Performing Arts through exhibitions, screenings and performances supported by education talks, forums, panel discussions, catalogues, programs and online material. Works on show are representative of a sample of outstanding VCE and VET students from the previous year for the benefit of current students and teachers.

VCE Visual Arts (Art: Creative Practice, Visual Communication Design and Media) and Design and Technologies (Product Design and Technology) students were fortunate to attend the Season of Excellence exhibitions in the past month. These excursions enabled students to deepen their knowledge and gain inspiration from top scoring VCE students.

Top Arts

On Thursday 22 March, Year 11 and Year 12 Art: Creative Practice students traveled to the city to visit the National Gallery of Victoria to see the Top Arts exhibition. This exhibition was filled with the top scoring students from last year’s study design.

All the students were able to seek inspiration from the unique and extraordinary group of works being displayed. We then explored the National Gallery of Victoria and viewed some of the remarkable curated
works, such as the wide range of artists in ‘Melbourne Now’, the Neon Wonderscape exhibition ‘Swarming’ by James Lemon and the variety of Indigenous and 19th Century Australian Art.

Top Designs

On Friday 31 March, VCE Product Design and Technology students attended the Top Designs exhibition at Melbourne Museum. The exhibition began with a presentation from fashion designer, Paris Culbertson, who spoke about her amazing career in fashion, which has led to the opening of her own company, Pazadz. Paris gave students an insight into her product design process and shared images about her recent collections and custom pieces.

Following this, students were able to view the exhibition of outstanding works from 2022 students. This included a range of work including Media movies and stories, Textiles garments and even robotic arms! The exhibition has allowed students to gain a greater insight into the requirements of the subject, how to deliver a high-quality garment and where inspiration can be drawn from.

Thank you to Ms Cotsis for organising this excursion.

Top Designs

On Thursday 30 March, Kilbreda’s Visual Communication and Design students embarked on an excursion to visit the Melbourne Museum, Top Design exhibition. Here, high scoring students across Victoria, were selected to exhibit their works that were completed in Unit 4, 2022 in their selected folio design subject.

We were all able to soak in the variety of creative thinking created by their peers as inspiration for future work and were able to view a variety of different outcomes, such as fashionable clothing, architectural designs, logos and product packaging, film making, furniture creation and even robotic software.

Before entering the exhibition, the students were also privy to a seminar conducted by VCAA examiners who gave insight into how to achieve the best possible folio mark, as well as a talk from an exhibition designer from the museum.

Thank you to Ms Radford for organising this excursion. Overall, it was a fantastic experience for all of us!

Top Screen

Entering into Year 12 Media is a daunting experience, however the Top Screen exhibition was an inspiring insight into possibilities for our future outcomes. During the presentation we found out how we can utilise different objects and techniques to produce the creation and appoint our own meanings into the product. The Top Screen finalists showcased how media can be shown in varying ways; whether it be documentary, claymation, film or music video. Each of them were unique, which we’re sure each of us could find meaning in in some shape or form.

Although intimidating, the NGV proved a place full of inspiration. From paintings from the 1500s to contemporary installations, we were able to learn the history behind each artwork and use it to consider for the contention of our outcomes.  Overall, from being exposed to all these ideas and presentations, we are more inspired and excited to begin scaffolding our products for the end of the year.

Thank you to Mr Murrill for organising the excursion.

VCE Art

Over the past month in the Art rooms the VCE Art students have been busy producing extensive research in their visual diaries that lead to their final artworks.

Last week, the Unit 3 students presented their critiques, which were an insightful explanation of their ideas and folio development. Their themes were varied and personal.

Year 8 Food Technology

We returned to Term 2 just after ANZAC Day and it was fitting that our Year 8 Food Technology classes were all making ANZAC Biscuits in that week and the following.

ANZAC biscuits have long been associated with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) established in World War I. It has been claimed that these biscuits were sent by wives and women’s groups to soldiers abroad because the ingredients did not spoil easily and the biscuits kept well during naval transportation.

I can assure you that the biscuits pictured didn’t make it home at the end of the day as they were devoured by our Year 8 students. The recipe is attached so perhaps you can make them together and enjoy as a family.
