Kilbreda Music Retreat: A Celebration of Talent and Growth

On 29 – 30 April, Kilbreda College was alive with the sound of music as 92 students gathered at the Kingston Arts Centre for our annual Music Retreat. This incredible event brought together students from our College ensembles for intensive rehearsals and workshops, led by expert tutors and special guests.

We were privileged to welcome Professor Rob McWilliams from Yamaha, who provided invaluable professional development for our staff, ensuring that our music program continues to thrive. Amanda Morrison, President of the Australian Band and Orchestra Director’s Association, worked closely with our instrumentalists, inspiring them to refine their precision and presentation. Meanwhile, Sally Gawley from the Australian School of Performing Arts, dazzled our choir with engaging activities that enhanced vocal technique and stage presence, leaving students energised and excited for their next performance.

Our Year 7 Orchestra Program students took part in selected workshops, preparing for their first-ever performance – a milestone moment in their musical journey! Beyond rehearsals, students enjoyed karaoke competitions, Kilbreda Festival heats, and tenpin bowling, fostering friendships and fun alongside their musical development.

All of this hard work and dedication will culminate in our Music By Candlelight “Let’s Get Loud” performance next week, where families are warmly invited to witness the incredible progress and passion of our talented musicians.

A huge thank you to all staff, tutors and special guests who made this Retreat such a rewarding experience. We can’t wait to see the magic unfold on stage next week!

Student Reflection

Thank you very much for organising and running the Music Retreat. I really appreciated it as it was both a fun and great learning experience. I thoroughly enjoyed it when Sally, the guest from the Australian Girls Choir, came and taught us new songs. I found it very helpful when she taught me the way to perform a song. I also found it helped me gain confidence while singing.

One of my favourite songs that we practised was “Cover Me in Sunshine” because it sounded really harmonic when everyone was singing it. I found the bowling entertaining too and, overall, I had a great time.
