Kilbreda Choreographic Competition

A new initiative for the Performing Arts department, the Kilbreda Choreographic Competition, was held over two lunchtime sessions in early October, showcasing the composition skills of our students. We have some skilled performers and dancers at Kilbreda as is evident in our many performances, and we are now aiming to build and nurture the choreographic and directorial skills of our students. Being involved in the creative process and able to devise movement material is an essential skill in being a ‘whole’ artist.

This year we had ten solo, duo and group entries and we are aiming to build on this each year to build a healthy and thriving competition each year in Term 4.

Our 2024 competition was adjudicated by three industry professionals, Charlotte Lewis-Williams, Aine Moroney and Olivia West. These three women are graduates of Kilbreda, studied VCE Dance, choreographed for KDC (Aine was the founder) and choreographed our school productions. As a result, they now work at leading Melbourne Performing Arts schools and share their choreographic skills with the industry.

We were so impressed with the talent of our student choreographers who revealed an excellent ability to create individual movements and use space, time and energy.

At the conclusion of our competition the judges shared their insights with the competitors and awarded the following places:

1st – Erin Kenny – solo

2nd – Lola Pearce and April O’Brien – duo

3rd – Olivia Aplojotis – solo

Cara Mitchell and Nicole Everett
