Assistant Principal – Staff

‘Shine a Light On’

‘Shine a Light On’ provides our College community a snapshot into the professional lives of our staff and what makes them ‘tick’ on a daily basis. Whilst we know that our staff do an amazing job, it is not as often that we publicly acknowledge the work that they do and the many wonderful ways that they contribute to the learning journeys of our students.

This week at the College we are profiling English, Religious Education and Year 7 Homeroom teacher, Cristelle D’Offay.

What originally inspired you to become a teacher and what motivates you now?

My VCE History Teacher when I was in High School was a real inspiration to me and she is one of the major reasons why I pursued a teaching career. I preferred English and Science to History, but she was able to see past the dates and facts and make the subject come to life beyond the basic curriculum. I was inspired by her unconventional techniques, and I strive to bring that same passion for innovative ways to learn into my classroom.

Nothing motivates me more than seeing a student have that “ah-ha” moment. When they feel confident in what they are doing and seeing the elation in their faces when hard work pays off is priceless.

What is the most rewarding part of being a teacher at Kilbreda College?

The greatest reward is working with the students every day. Nothing makes a teacher prouder than seeing their students succeed and Kilbreda really fosters an environment of inclusiveness and support. Being a Year 7 Homeroom Teacher really gives me the ability to build positive relationships with the students that extend beyond just curriculum knowledge. Furthermore, the staff here at Kilbreda College are beyond passionate for their students and one another. Being a new teacher to Kilbreda in 2021 meant that I had to learn a new system as well as make new friendships. It has been a seamless pathway for me to not only make positive connections with the English department but the entire staff who have been nothing short of warm and welcoming. I continue to be excited and challenged by both my peers and the students here.
