Inspiring STEM+ Programme

This year, we are thrilled to partner with Laing O’Rourke to offer the two-year ‘Inspiring STEM+ Programme’ providing insight into careers in engineering and construction. Laing O’Rourke is a family-owned, international construction company and will be responsible for delivering several large infrastructure projects around Melbourne in the coming years. Last year, when Laing O’Rourke spoke to our students about their company, the opportunities that are available within traditionally male-dominated fields, and gave an overview of the ‘Inspiring STEM+ Programme’, we were delighted that 64 of our Year 9 students expressed interest in participating. With student feedback including, “I would like to be able to experience something new and embrace a new challenge in an area I’m not overly familiar with. I feel this would be a great opportunity prior to beginning VCE to see potential career paths that I might not otherwise explore”, we are really looking forward to the first of eight modules beginning on Wednesday this week, 29 March.

On 15 February, at an Information Session for students and their parents, the participants had the opportunity to build towers out of marshmallows and spaghetti, a taste of what’s to come over the next two years. A memorable moment included Class of 2019, past pupil and former STEM Captain, Madison Carty presenting at the session. Madison is now an undergraduate at Laing O’Rourke, an inspiration and role model for all. We are so excited at the prospect of our students having the opportunity to shape the future of STEM industries with the help of Laing O’Rourke and we look forward to bringing you updates over the next two years.
