Indigenous Immersion with St Bede’s College

Recently, our Year 9 and 10 FIRE Carriers and Student Leaders, in conjunction with students from St Bede’s College, embarked on an Indigenous Immersion to ‘Saltbush’ in Balnarring. They participated in many activities ranging from weaving to spear-throwing and learnt more about Indigenous culture. The leader of many of these activities was Adam Magennis, a Bunurong artist who frequently works with our College. Each day began with a smoking ceremony where native plants including wattle, manna gum and cherry ballart, which all have significant meaning were used. During the day the groups would make bracelets out of native plants, paint, throw spears and in the evening gather for movies including the eye-opening documentary, “In My Blood It Runs”. A highlight of the Immersion was the guided tour of the bush, where plants were identified that could be used for cooking, medicinal or practical purposes. An experience to remember!
