Sustainability
The final topic for Year 7 Science this year was Earth’s Resources. During this topic, the students were asked to select an issue concerning our use of Earth’s resources and develop an action to make a change at Kilbreda (or at home) that could, in some small way, help address this issue. The Year 7s took on this challenge with enthusiasm and creativity! We had a wide range of actions taking place and some amazing results from these actions. Our students:
- picked up litter in the school grounds and analysed where the greatest amounts of litter were being left and what types of rubbish contributed the most to our litter problem (plastic packaging of snacks!)
- ran a bake sale at recess to raise money for a sustainability issue
- planted native plants in the garden to attract insects and birds and created a video to help encourage others to do the same
- organised the collection of textile waste to be recycled
- ran clothes swaps to encourage a more sustainable approach to fashion
- created signs to inform our school community about the sustainable temperatures to set heating and cooling
- raised awareness of decreasing water use by creating signs to use the half flush in toilets
- developed new signs for our waste bins to inform our community about what goes in which bin (students analysed how much contamination was happening in the bins)
- plus many more actions!
Congratulations to all of our Year 7 students for your hard work and passion for caring for our planet.
On our final Tuesday of Term 4, the Student Environmental Action Leaders are hosting a breakfast at Kilbreda with the Environmental Leaders from St Bede’s College. Our students will have the opportunity to share successes and challenges, as well as begin planning for next year. We look forward to future collaborations between our schools.
