Incursion with Rohan Browne

Last week, our senior Drama and Musical Theatre students were treated to an inspiring incursion with Rohan Browne – renowned Australian actor, singer and dancer – whose career spans over two decades across stage, screen and international tours. From starring as ‘The Rum Tum Tugger’ in Cats to performing alongside Geoffrey Rush in The Drowsy Chaperone, Rohan’s versatility and artistry have earned him multiple Green Room Award nominations and a reputation as one of Australia’s leading triple-threat performers.

In a dynamic 90-minute workshop, Rohan guided students through the Stanislavski method of character development. Working with selected scenes, students explored the inner motivations and obstacles of their characters, learning how psychological realism can elevate performance. Through physicality, intention and emotional truth, each participant refined their approach to scene work – resulting in noticeable growth in characterisation and confidence.

This incursion not only deepened students’ understanding of dramatic technique but also offered a rare opportunity to learn from a professional whose career embodies excellence and passion. We thank Rohan for his generosity, insight and infectious energy – and look forward to seeing these skills shine in future performances.

Student Reflection

This year the VCE and Year 10 Music class has been lucky to have many performance opportunities in front of different audiences – the Candlelight Concert, VCE Music recital, class workshops and most recently, a lunchtime ‘Laneway Festival’ performance in the Auditorium during Week 4.

Performing in so many different environments has helped us gain confidence and learn how to connect with audiences of all kinds. Being self-led performances, we were tasked with introducing ourselves and our pieces. Understanding the musical tone and character became paramount to our expression and interpretation whilst playing, bettering our knowledge and technique as musicians to more effectively engage with our audience and present the message which we intend to convey through the music.
