Professional Learning Day – The Ethical and Practical Implications of GAI
On Friday 23 May, Leon Furze explored Generative AI with the teaching and Learning Diversity staff at Kilbreda College.
Leon Furze is an international consultant, author and speaker with over 15 years of experience in secondary and tertiary education and leadership. Leon is studying his PhD in the implications of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) on writing instruction and education.
Leon began his presentation by explaining the bias that exists in the AI data set and the environmental concerns, particularly the use of energy sources such as coal. He also discussed the concerns with non-consensual deep fakes that are being developed. Through discussing the ethics Leon was keen for everyone to have an understanding of the data sets that AI was producing and to bear this in mind when accessing the many AI platforms.

In the second session Leon assisted teachers to explore the many AI platforms and how they can assist with exploring topics, ideas, creating rubrics and research. AI Platforms such as Chat GPT, Gemini, Canva and Claude all encompass many components that can assist with research, planning and organisation.
In the final session we discussed assessment, and the role AI may play with assessment tasks. Leon introduced an assessment scale that we were asked to explore – would there be aspects of assessments where AI could be implemented? If so, how would we structure and grade our assessment?
We concluded the session feeling challenged but ready to explore the use of AI in education and how we can continue to enhance student learning and outcomes at Kilbreda College.
“As a PhD Candidate studying Generative AI in education, I’m interested in the ethical and practical implications of GAI. To help navigate the complexities of GAI, I work with schools, universities, and education providers through professional learning, policy, and advisory services.”
