Upcoming Indigenous Performances
In Term 2, the Reading Connections classes look at the ‘Indigenous Voices through Literature’ and as part of this study, the students will experience Aboriginal perspectives through story and culture, with specially selected Indigenous performers.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always expressed their voices through their oral and written stories: “First Nations’s history, educational stories and stories of country, creation and tradition have been passed down through generations (QCAA, 2018)” Read more HERE
On Tuesday 10 June, Majeda Beatty, a Sydney based singer, actress and dancer who comes from a proud Wuthathi mother, will take Year 7 and 8s on a journey of Australia’s First Nation dreamtime, presenting both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island cultures as well as sharing her perspective on being an Indigenous millennial woman. Majeda was taught the importance of her culture from her mother through movement, song and storytelling.
On Tuesday 22 July, Boori Monty Prior, a performer, writer and storyteller, will inspire the Year 9s with his personal journey from a young boy spending too much time in the Principal’s Office to being a Prime Minister’s Literary Award Winner. Boori will demonstrate to students that by telling our own stories we can find a sense of belonging. Students are encouraged to ask questions about our history and to appreciate the beauty of words and the power of writing. This presentation blends fact, fiction and Dreamtime stories to inspire and encourage students to pursue their own writing.
