Reconciliation Week: Indigenous Voices in Literature and Culture

On Tuesday 10 June, Majeda Beatty, a Sydney based singer, actress and dancer who comes from a proud Wuthathi mother, took Year 7 and 8 students on a journey of Australia’s First Nation dreamtime, presenting both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island cultures as well as sharing her perspective on being an Indigenous millennial woman. Majeda was taught the importance of her culture from her mother through movement, song and storytelling.

Some student feedback comments are below:

“Majeda’s story was so inspiring and personally I loved the way she presented her culture in fun ways. Majeda asked people to volunteer and get up and learn dances. I saw how passionate she was about her culture and that’s something I felt was really nice. We learnt about traditional dances, traditions and how they live in North Queensland.”

Natalie

“Majeda was so amazing and fun. I loved being able to learn more and participate in immersive cultural dances. I learnt so much about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Majeda is a passionate teacher and I really enjoyed her coming to Kilbreda.”
