Unit 4 Data Analytics Infographics

Year 12s have been working diligently on their Data Analytics portfolio pieces for most of Term 2 and 3. It’s a large project involving: project management, writing research questions, data collection, data cleansing, data manipulation using spreadsheets/database, testing, evaluating and then finally representing their findings in an infographic. It was with great relief that they submitted their portfolios last week! Attached are some examples of the final infographics- as you can see there were a broad range of topics researched this year from UFO sightings, representation of women in the movies, AFL, Women in Space, Formula 1, travel abroad and even RuPaul’s drag race!

In Data Analytics Unit 4 we’ve been working on developing and researching our topics to generate fun infographics. Based on a research question, that we were allowed to choose, we took the time to find data on said topic, which we tweaked and transferred into spreadsheets and databases to find fun facts that corresponded to our original question. Basing mine on the reality show ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’, I wanted to analyse what sort of qualities of the contestants caused them to be more likely to win.

Year 9 Photoshop

Term 3 for Year 9s is all about data analysis. Students have been learning all the key skills such as data cleansing, manipulation and data visualisation. Our topic has been Pokémon and we used a large online dataset and analysed the patterns and trends to present interesting findings. Attached are some of their amazing first attempts at infographics! Well done, Year 9s.

Year 8 Photoshop

Year 8s have been honing their Adobe Photoshop skills, using a range of software features such as brushes, photo editing and text manipulation. They have produced some beautiful work from language/art posters to reimagining book covers to ‘Cartoon me’ artwork and gothic style images of celebrities and toys.

Year 7 Python

This term Year 7s have been working on their programming skills with the programming language, Python. They have been focusing on using the turtle module to create some wonderful works of art. Here are some variations on the robot program that students created. Next up, students will take these skills and create their own images. We can’t wait to see what they create!

Melb Uni Girls in STEM

During the holidays I had the chance to attend a camp at Melbourne University for Engineering and IT as a part of the 4-year Girl Power program. The program began with a four day stay at one of the University’s residential colleges with many trips to the campus in the day. Upon arrival we were treated with many freebies such as a team jumper and much more. The whole camp was an incredible experience where we attended many workshops such as website development, drone programming, prosthetic leg and bridge building. Each workshop gave us valuable skills in each engineering field and allowed us to trial what the fields may be like.

We also had the chance to attend a panel evening where we were given the opportunity to ask questions to a panel of amazing women in various STEM fields which gave many of the girls who attended some clarity to what they might want to pursue in the future. Whilst on the camp we also had many chances to learn skills outside of workshops and formal learning. We learnt project managing skills, practised working in teams to achieve a common goal and developed a strong connection with like-minded people who we quickly became great friends with. Overall, the camp was an amazing experience and I highly encourage everyone to apply (especially if you are going into Year 9 next year) and I am looking forward to the future stages of this program. Please feel free to get in touch with me for details about the application process.
