Geography

Year 9 students have been out and about recently, with opportunities to experience field work in a number of their subjects. The Geography excursion provided students with an opportunity to work together and investigate a range of issues related to their current unit.

Student Reflections

We had the opportunity to visit Braeside Park and investigate the different effects that human interaction has had on the wetland environment. We learnt how to complete a field sketch, using the acronym OASIS, to ensure we had all the necessary details. We also immersed a water test strip into the wetlands to determine the chemical elements and water quality, both of which have been effected by human interaction. We concluded that the water quality of the wetland area is not too acidic, meaning lots of nutrients, vegetation and animals are able to thrive in the healthy environment.

Over two days, the Year 9 students ventured off to Braeside Park on an excursion to determine “What are the impacts of human activities on the area of the Braeside Park wetlands?” We observed different areas within the grounds of Braeside Park to survey the wildlife, the PH level of the wetland waters, the facilities Braeside Park had to offer as well as its beautiful scenery. After completing the three different activities including testing the water and sketching two different areas of Braeside Park using the OASIS method as well as the BOLTSS technique, we gathered enough information to determine our opinion.

In the Geography excursion to Braeside Park, we learnt different things about the wetlands biome. We made maps of the park, found out PH levels in the wetlands waters and saw different animals that lived in the park. There were so many different plants and wildlife in the park and it was very interesting to see all of the different biomes. I really enjoyed this excursion.
