We have finally selected this year’s Sustainability Leaders and last week the Year 7, 8 and 9 Leaders gathered to meet each other and discuss some plans for next term. It was exciting to hear the range of innovative and creative ideas. The whole team will meet before the end of this term to start getting our actions planned! 

Foreshore Program

The final session for Semester 1 Foreshore was last week and we travelled to the Kingston Council Nursery to see how Indigenous plants are grown from seeds and cuttings to help revegetate the Mentone Foreshore, where we have been working. The students helped tease out the newly germinated seedlings before planting into individual pots. They managed to plant at least 150 new seedlings! Thank you to the Kingston Council staff who have taught us about the foreshore ecosystem, as well as thanks to the enthusiastic and hard-working students on the program this semester. You are all wonderful ambassadors for the College.  

Plastic Free July

The Sustainability Team will use the Plastic Free July global movement campaign (https://www.plasticfreejuly.org/) to raise awareness about the issues the world faces as a result of plastic pollution and encourage our community to try some ideas about how to reduce the use of plastic or recycle plastic items. We have lots of ideas so watch out for our posts and activities from Week 1 in Term 3.

Vegetable Garden

This term, Year 7 and 8 students have helped out in the vegetable garden. They have weeded the beds, planted snow peas and helped get our compost pile ready to use for garden waste. We need some hessian sacks to help cover the compost, if anyone has any spare. The strawberry patch is getting bigger and the herbs are also doing well!

Refugee Week – 18 to 24 June

2023 Theme – Finding Freedom 

What does it mean to be free?  

To live without the fear of war, to have your basic human rights upheld, to live in equality and without the fear of persecution, are just some of the examples of what freedom can entail. Every day, millions of people across the world embark on dangerous journeys for the sole purpose of finding safety and freedom. From Australia to nations across the globe, settling into a new environment after experiencing the perils of a refugee’s journey can also provide the opportunity to live, to love and to dream.

BASP Winter Food Drive

Each year, the College community supports refugees through our BASP Winter Food Drive. Donations of food and essential goods will be given to the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project (BASP) for them to distribute to those in most need.

Linked is a list of goods most needed. Each Homeroom has a bag to collect items, or they can be left at the school office. Goods will be collected up until Thursday 22 June.
