Year 9
Year 9 Social
The night of nights for the Year 9 cohort was held last week as the annual Year 9 Social was held with St Bede’s College. Approximately 350 students from St Bede’s and Kilbreda all descended into the beautifully decorated Hall, as Kilbreda once more hosted this much anticipated event. The Hall looked spectacular with it being adorned with twinkling fairy lights and featuring a sparkly photo backdrop. Students, dressed in their interpretations of smart casual attire excitedly entered.
With dancing skills having been polished over the previous three weeks of Learn to Dance sessions at St Bede’s, the students quickly found their rhythm showing off their skills to swing dancing under the guidance of dance instructor Taryn.
After a good hour of twirls, spins and four step, swing dancing was replaced with DJ Jess. She encouraged students to get up and dance to some more well-known songs. There was lots of enthusiastic singing and even some more energetic dance moves observed as the night progressed.
Lots of laughter, chatter and photos were taken by students from both schools. It was lovely to see some lovely new connections made between students from both schools and even strengthened some existing ones. The event was more than just a dance; it was a celebration of camaraderie and mutual respect. Students displayed exemplary conduct and enthusiasm, making the night a resounding success.
As students departed, the smiles and laughter echoed the sentiment of a night well spent, marking the event as a cherished memory in their school journey.
Student Reflection
We have recently had the wonderful opportunity to participate in some Learn to Dance sessions with the Year 9s at St Bede’s, in preparation for our Year 9 Social. In our first session on Monday 4 May, we all arrived at St Bede’s in the afternoon full of nerves and excitement. As we sat on the floor and waited, I remember thinking “Why am I doing this?” I was so nervous! However, when we started to dance, I realised how fun it was. We all laughed when we found out the song that we would be dancing to was ‘Dance the Night Away’ by Dua Lipa. There were people dancing with their friends and some who were doing the dances properly with the boys, but everyone was giving it a shot. As we learned the steps to the dance, everyone started to get less nervous and more confident. Most were even looking forward to our next session.
Our second Learn to Dance Session took place on Monday 11 May. This time we were in the bigger hall at St Bede’s, so it was easier to be in four different circles. This week we were learning a bit of a slower dance to the song ‘Put Your Records On’ by Corinne Bailey Rose. There was a lot more enthusiasm this week, and almost everyone was up and dancing with someone. As we stumbled through the box step, spun through the turns and tripped through the side steps, everyone laughed and had fun. Our third and final session was on Monday 18 May. In this session we revised the two dances that we had learned, making sure they were on point for the Social. I must say, they looked pretty good!
We are all very excited about our Year 9 Social, which (was) on Thursday 21 May. A special thank you to St Bede’s for having us every Monday for the past three weeks, Ms Carroll, the St Bede’s Year 9 Coordinator, Taryn (the lovely dance instructor), the Year 8 students from Kilbreda and St Bede’s who put in the extra effort to help teach and demonstrate the dances, and all the teachers who came and supported us over these sessions. We have all made so many beautiful memories throughout this experience!
