Year 11

Student Reflection

On 26 August during Pastoral, Year 11 students were enlightened by the wonderful Sonya Karras with a talk about staying safe at parties, drinking and drugs. She told us about being safe when in an Uber or taxi and the ways you can ensure any ride you take. One takeaway from this section for me was that when you’re in a taxi, they legally need to have a tag with their name, photo and unique identification number. You are within your rights to ask for them to show the tag or display it if not displayed. She also spoke about drinking and the ways you can protect yourself when drinking. In my opinion, the most important topic she spoke about was drink spiking and the ways to spot it. She showed us an infographic (see image below) on how to tell if a drink has been spiked. We finished off by speaking about drugs; she did a review of ketamine, the same drug we spoke about in our session last year, and she did a once-over of the laws and repercussions of the use of alcohol and drugs. As a cohort, we all appreciate Sonya for coming out and speaking to us and look forward to welcoming her back next year as Year 12s.
