Languages Week

During Languages Week, students in Years 7 – 9 Japanese classes took part in an Uchiwa (traditional Japanese fan) decorating activity, along with Japanese snack tasting. Students in Years 10 – 12 Japanese classes enjoyed making Japanese fruit sandos during their lessons. Fruit sando is a very popular item in convenience stores across Japan.

It was great to see students enjoying the activities, showcasing their creativity and craft skills, along with wonderful teamwork in the kitchen as well as taking care of the clean-up afterwards. The Canteen also offered a Japanese-themed menu, including sushi and gyoza, so many students could take part in the Languages Week celebrations.

Student Reflection

こんにちわ from Year 9! This week our class personalised a Japanese Uchiwa fan for Languages Week. These fans introduced both traditional and modern aspects of Japanese culture to us as we learnt that these fans are used with summer kimonos (Yukata) and are used at concerts to support artists and groups. After designing our wonderful fans with our favourite characters, random drawings and traditional designs and origami, we got to try a popular Japanese snack called Pocky. Although the Pocky was a big highlight, we had just as much fun making the fans and learned a lot about Japanese culture.

Year 9

Years 10 – 12 French

Students from Years 10, 11 and 12 recently spent an enriching day at the Alliance Française in Melbourne, immersing themselves in French language and culture. Year 10 students explored cultural stereotypes, while Years 11 and 12 participated in workshops focused on contemporary French media and press. The excursion was an engaging and valuable experience that students greatly appreciated as they continue to develop their intercultural understanding and refine their communication skills in preparation for their VCE French exams.
